Message from the Principal

Welcome to Washington Academic Middle School (WAMS). We are a 6th-8th grade middle school of approximately 1700 students. WAMS is located in Sanger, California, approximately 12 miles southeast of Fresno. We have a dynamic staff of educators that love teaching and are committed to the success and well being of every student.

WAMS will be moving from “Early Release to “Late Starts” on the Wednesdays listed below. On these days, buses will pick up students approximately two hours later (see bus schedules). On Late Start Wednesdays, students may arrive on campus after 9:30. School begins at 10:10.

I am also excited to announce the implementation of the Olweus Anti-Bullying program. All staff will be working closely the students to educate students on bullying and positively impacting the school culture. We are also beginning the 6th grade orientation/mentoring program called W.E.B. (Where Everybody Belongs). Over 90 8th grade leaders will be working with our 6th graders to ensure a successful transition to middle school.
WAMS has an extremely effective staff dedicated to helping the students succeed. We look forward to a great school year. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the school.

Sincerely,

Jon Yost

Ways Parents Can Help Raise Funds For Promotion

The WAMS PTA has created some ways to help raise the needed funds to pay for 8th grade promotion.
Here is how you can help:
1. Buy a one-day pass to Wild Water Adventures Water Park for $15. PTA will be in front of Walmart on Feb 13th & 20th from 10-2 p.m. selling tickets. You may also stop by the WAMS office. We have 450 tickets to sell.... 100% of the money goes towards promotion.
2. Students will be receiving fundraising materials to sell candles on February 8th. There is an approximate profit margin of 50% and all profits go towards promotion. If every student sold 1 candle, we estimate our profits to be $5000.
3. Parents may make a donation at any time. Either stop by the WAMS front office or see at PTA board member.
4. We will be selling WAMS Class of 2010 t-shirts in Feb/March. Approximately $4 per shirt will go towards promotion. Details will be coming out shortly.

We have approximately $4400 raised so far. PTA has set a goal of $9000.

A Pig Named Bertha Gives A Sanger 8th Grade Class Hope
Watch Bertha Video
This 200 pound pig walked the streets of Sanger getting donations from local businesses. The donations would go to pay for the promotion ceremony at WAMS. Budget cuts forced the school to cancel their promotion ceremony.

(Thanks to KSEE Channel 24 for their coverage of this story.)

Correction to story: 8th grade students do not "graduate" they are "promoted" to high school. High school students "graduate."

WALMART Donates $3000

John Frieberg from WALMART presented WAMS with a donation check for $3000 for the 8th grade promotion ceremony. WAMS would like to thank WALMART from the bottom of their hearts for this generous donation and helping us keep the 8th grade promotion tradition alive. WAY TO GO WALMART!!!

Parent Meeting Held Regarding 8th Grade Promotion

On Monday, October 26th approximately 150 WAMS parents attended a meeting regarding fundraising to pay for the cost of WAMS 8th Grade Promotion Ceremony. A fundraising committee has been formed to help raise just under $9000 for the event. If you were unable to make the meeting, but would like to be a part of committee, please contact the school and we will get your name/number to our PTA board.

Several parents wanted to make a donation to the event. If you want to make a donation, make your check out to WAMS PTA and write on the check 8th grade promotion. Any donations may be dropped off at the WAMS front office.

The committee chairperson is Veronica Cuellar. Her contact information is 978-1052 or veronica.g.cuellar@gmail.com
