Dear Jethro

“There can be no neutrals in this war.”
Senator Stephen Douglas (April 1861)

“Dear Jethro...”

“Imagine you are living in one of the Border States when Fort Sumter
is
bombed & the Civil War breaks out. Like many people you are now forced to
decide which side you are going to support. Write a letter ( 4-5 paragraphs )
to your cousin who lives in Ohio explaining your decision.
REMEMBER YOU WANT TO BE ON THE WINNING SIDE, SO USE THE “BLUE VS.
GRAY” &
WHAT WE HAVE DISCUSSED IN CLASS TO SUPPORT YOUR ARGUMENT.
Don’t forget to write this in letter form (“Dear Jethro, how are you
doing,
how’s the family, what’s the weather like, etc). Date your letter April
15,1861 (3 days after the bombing of Fort Sumter)
