WHY IS MATH IMPORTANT??
Listen to this frustrated consumer talking to a "professional" and you will hear one reason why understanding place value is crucial. The placement of the decimal point, place value, and conversion factors are "real world" skills. http://www.todaysbigthing.com/2009/02/09
GRADES PAGE
You can check your student’s progress by going to the grades page (http://teacherweb.com/CA/SantaBarbaraJuniorHighSchool/Glenn/AllClasses/Grades.html ), entering your student’s last name and 6-digit ID number. The record that will be presented shows the most recent work for the last few weeks of the second semester, but keep in mind that the cumulative grade is for all the work they have done throughout the semester. If you want a printout of the entire semester's work (to date), drop me an email and I can send a copy home with your student or attach a file to an a-mail.
DROP-IN TUTORING
Please keep in mind that I am available after school to help your student. Please take advantage of my drop-in tutoring sessions: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 2:40 - 3:30 and Friday 2:20-3:30
UPCOMING STAR TESTING
After Spring Break, I will be jumping around through the chapters we have not yet done (Chapters 8, 9 and 10) in an effort to touch on the topics that will likely be included on the STAR test. This can be a confusing time since we are not following the sections sequentially. The homework page will help to keep track of what we are doing.
TEST ANXIETY??
I have heard it before... "My son was really ready for the test. I don't know why he didn't do better. He knows this stuff." If your child suffers from test anxiety (or you wonder if that's the problem), I have added a link to an informative site that gives good suggestions to help students overcome test anxiety. Read this with your student and discuss these suggestions. There's no time like the present to perform a little self-help. http://www.education.com/reference/article/Ref_Helping_Overcome/
EXTRA CREDIT
Extra credit is available to students three times per chapter: on the days of the two chapter quizzes and the chapter test. It is optional, but I recommend that they do it unless their homework load is such that they are overloaded that day or otherwise too busy. In addition, students will be given extra credit points (equal to an extra credit assignment) for bringing in an empty DELL, HP or LEXMARK brand printer or toner cartridge, which I recycle. If students bring in extra cartridges they can "bank" them until they are used. Extra credit limit will be three per chapter (any combination of worksheets or cartridges).
REPLACEMENT WORKBOOK
If your student loses their workbook, they will need to purchase a replacement at $11.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to send an e-mail to me at kglenn@sbsdk12.org.
Thanks for being informed!
