Purpose:
The Purpose of this class is to expand the student’s “understanding
of history by studying the people and events that ushered in the dawn of the
major western and non- western ancient civilizations. Emphasis is placed on
the everyday lives, problems, and accomplishments of people, their role in
developing social, economic, and political structures, as well as in
establishing and spreading ideas that helped transform the world forever.
Students will develop higher levels of critical thinking by considering why
civilizations developed, where and when they did, why they became dominant,
and why they declined. Students will also analyze the interactions among the
various cultures, emphasizing their enduring contributions and the link,
despite time, between the contemporary and ancient worlds.”

Notebook Check:
Organizational skills will be stressed in the middle school in order
to prepare for high school. All notes, handouts, study guides, quizzes and
tests should be kept in a notebook that will be collected at the end of each
unit of study. Do not throw anything away! Notebooks will be evaluated for
neatness and completeness.
In/Class Assignments:
Success on in-class assignments will greatly depend on the active
participation of the student. The assignments will be designed to stimulate
interest in the topic being discussed. Willing and active participation is
the key to this section of the grading scale. Being prepared for class is
also part of class participation and students are expected to bring paper,
pencil, text book, and notebook to each class.
Homework:
Assignments need to be complete, on time, and neat. Homework will
include reading activities, questions from the book, illustrating, completion
of in-class projects, and studying. Late assignments will be marked down and
only accepted if turned in while working on the unit they pertain to. After
a unit is complete no work will be accepted from that unit. If absent on the
day an assignment is due, the assignment is due upon return to school for
full credit. If work is assigned while absent, it is due within a week of
return to school unless circumstances warrant an extension. Homework will be
assigned every class period.
Quizzes:
Short quizzes will be given after every two lessons in a chapter.
Usually there are two quizzes per chapter. Quizzes missed because of an
excused absence must be made up within one week upon return to school.
Tests & Projects:
Tests and projects will be used to demonstrate understanding and
mastery of a unit. Tests missed because of an excused absence must be made
up within one week upon returning to school. Research projects will count
as a test grade. Research skills will grow in this class to include a
written report, a quiz and fact sheet for the class, a visual aid, an oral
presentation and a power point.
