What is AVID?
AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is an elementary through postsecondary college readiness system that is designed to increase school wide learning and performance. The AVID system accelerates student learning, uses research based methods of effective instruction, provides meaningful and motivational professional development, and acts as a catalyst for systemic reform and change.
The AVID Student
AVID targets students of all levels and abilities - students who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum.
The AVID Elective
Not only are students enrolled in their school's toughest classes, such as honors and Advanced Placement®, but also in the AVID elective. For one period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. Their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.
The AVID Curriculum
The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It is driven by the WICR method, which stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading. AVID curriculum is used in AVID elective classes, in content-area classes in AVID schools, and even in schools where the AVID elective is not offered.
The AVID Faculty
One key to a successful AVID program is a site coordinator/teacher who is a respected site instructional leader who works well with secondary school personnel and college students and faculty, who can organize curriculum as well as activities, and who is committed to serving the needs of target students. The coordinator also works with colleagues to implement AVID methodologies school wide, to place students in college preparatory curriculum, and to work with counselors to guide students through the college application process.
The AVID Tutor
Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID elective class, where they facilitate student access to rigorous curriculum. Tutors receive formal training and also serve as role models. AVID students who continue their education in college often return to the program as tutors.
The AVID Parent
AVID parents encourage their students to achieve academically.
Results
State-funded, independent research, together with AVID's own data, validate that the AVID college-readiness system works. Consider: AVID students are more likely to take AP classes, complete their college eligibility requirements, and get into four-year colleges than students who don't take AVID. Almost all AVID students who participate for at least three years are accepted to college, with roughly three quarters getting into four-year universities. AVID also helps ensure students, once accepted to college, possess the higher-level skills they need for college success.
How Will AVID be Taught at SYVCS?
AVID will be a 4-day a week class at SYVCS. One day a week will focus on tutorials, two days will be based around AVID curriculum, and one day a week will focus on guest speakers, teambuilding, organizing, etc. SYHS will be sending over high school AVID students as tutors during our tutorial days; these students will help students with their work and serve as role models for the middle school students.
Doubts about AVID?
The students will not be placed in lower level classes based on AVID. WE encourage our students to take honors and AP classes. Most students should fit the criteria, but not all have to. Remember the students should want to be in the class. It is a prep class to help with organization, study skills and college awareness. We will be preparing them for high school. Many students in AVID have 3.5-4.2 GPAs at the high school, and AVID has helped them get there or kept them there. It will not fit for all students and sometimes the students will start and not need the extra support to continue on with the program.

Tutorials
“Fun Friday” (guest speaker, field trips, Socratic seminars, philosophical chairs, binder checks, community building, etc.)
Tutorials will be Tuesday and Thursdays. During tutorials, students will be placed in small groups based on their “Tutorial Request Form” they fill out as homework. These forms allow students to identify an area and / or subject they are struggling with. Tutorials allow students to work with a tutor and peers, working though the problems they are having step by step. This is an interactive process which allows students to question, evaluate, and synthesize information.
I am looking forward to a great first year of AVID with our students! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
