Policies, Procedures, & Grading

Policies and Procedures:

Absences

Students who are absent must be responsible for obtaining any missed work. The homework missed will be on the homework board and online. Any worksheets that I handed out will be on their desk when they return. The students will also be responsible for turning in the homework to me or they will receive a zero for that assignment. I am enforcing this to help build responsibility in my students in order to help prepare them for fifth grade.

Homework

Homework should not take your child longer than one hour. If your child is exceeding this limit, please have them stop and either write me a note or send me an email. I would like to discuss with you the possibility of
students NOT REMAINING ON TASK during school or the possibility that we need to modify their assignments on a case by case situation.

I do not want the students to feel overwhelmed, nor do I want them getting burnt out. I have noticed several students NOT utilizing their class time effectively, thus they have had more homework than others who have remained
on task.

I understand having daily homework rather than weekly homework is a big adjustment for most students. I usually have upcoming work that will be due later on in the week online and on the homework board. I plan in advance to
help accommodate each student’s after school activities so that students can get work done ahead of time if they know that they will be busy one particular afternoon after school.

Some students have developed the habit of not writing down the correct assignments or they have not taken the time to look at their assignments prior to leaving school. I would like students to begin utilizing their planners rather than relying solely on the homework that I post on the website because some students are forgetting to take home essential books and papers necessary to complete their assignments. I also modify homework that I post at the beginning of the week based upon how quickly or slowly we are moving through certain subjects. To compensate for this, I have been
checking planners prior to students leaving the classroom and I have provided them with ample time for packing up at the end of the day. I have let the students know that filling out their planners and bringing them to school each day is as important as their homework and will be treated as such.

Grading:

Grades will be updated weekly using Thinkwave and will be accessible to both parents and students online.

The fourth and fifth grade team, use the following grading scale with the exception of fourth grade issuing a letter grade of N rather than a D or an F:

100%-93% A 4
92%-90% A- 3.67
89%-87% B+ 3.33
86%-83% B 3
82%-80% B- 2.67
79%-77% C+ 2.33
76%-73% C 2
72%-70% C- 1.67
69%-67% D+ 1.33
66%-63% D 1
62%-60% D- 0.67
59% F 0.33

Each student’s overall grade will be weighted as follows:
Homework/Class work 40%
Exams/Quizzes 60%
