*Homework begins 9/15
Homework
Each week your child will bring home his/her homework folder on
Monday. Enclosed assignments are to be completed and returned to school each
Friday unless otherwise noted. PLEASE BE SURE TO REVIEW YOUR CHILD’S WORK SO
THAT YOU CAN HELP YOUR CHILD AS NEEDED. THERE IS NO SENSE IN ALLOWING A
CHILD TO PRACTICE INCORRECTLY. Your signature, each week, will ensure that
you have reviewed and helped your child with necessary corrections.
Homework will include all or part of the following:
• A coversheet with specific directions. Please write your name and number on
all sheets. It's good practice!
• READING: Students will be required to read at least 15 minutes each
night. Books read should be at you child’s instructional level or just
below. There is a form each month to record nightly minutes read. These
sheets will be collected the last Friday of each month. Minutes read on the
weekend and/or on holidays may be included. You are also encouraged to read
to/with your child. Reading aloud provides an opportunity for new language
and vocabulary to be modeled using material above your child’s reading level.
Your child can earn a free book from a Scholastic book order when a Reading
goal is reached!
Note: Your child will also be bringing home a Reading practice book from their
RTI Reading group each week in a book bag. Please follow instructions from
your child’s RTI Reading teacher and return the book and any signed slips
included in the bag. Thank you!
• WRITING: Each week your child will be asked to write for at least 15
minutes. The purpose is to build comprehension and writing fluency.
We will specify the topic in the Homework packet.
When work is returned home for editing/revising, you may see the following
symbols used by your teacher:
Editing Symbols
capitalize (3 lines under the letter)
spelling error (word circled and/or write "sp")
insert (a carrot arrow)
incorrect case (cross off, write "lc" for lower case)
missing punctuation (use a carrot with a comma or a period circled)
• MATH: Activities will provide practice for concepts that have been
introduced in class. Please follow directions and show your work always!
• SPELLING/EDITING: Each Monday, your child will bring home a spelling
list. Spelling words will then need to be practiced at home on a daily
basis. You may want to keep spelling lists as we not only want children to
learn to spell them correctly for Friday’s test, but be able to use them
daily in their own writing. Homework will include Spelling practice pages
from our Reading series.
• CHALLENGE WORK: If you and your child would like additional
challenges, you may complete the included list of Math activities sent home
each month with Homework. In addition, your child may go online to visit
sites from our 2nd grade web site. Please complete a "Web Log" if you do so,
then return to school. Your teacher will give you a reward for completing
additional work!
• ORAL PRESENTATIONS: Second graders will be assigned speaking
assignments throughout the year. Some preparation will be done in class.
However, additional work will be required at home. Practice and rehearsal
will also be assigned as homework. Presentations will be graded using
rubrics that will come home with additional details prior to each speaking
date.
• BOOK ORDERS: Book order forms will come home in the homework
folder or conduit. If you’d like to order books, please record your child’s
name on the form as well as the selections desired. Send the form along with
a check made out to Scholastic Book Clubs(unless otherwise noted) on the
date listed on the book order. Book orders are an inexpensive way to build
you child’s library.
Please contact us with any questions regarding homework. Thank-you in
advance for your support!
Sincerely,
The Second Grade Team
