5th Grade Spelling
What to expect for 5th grade spelling -
Our spelling is divided into units and each unit has a phonics rule that it reinforces. Each unit will be introduced on Monday. We will not have pretests this year. The students will be assigned several pages of spelling work to reinforce the phonics rule we discuss on Monday. The spelling pages will be due on Thursday with the unit culminating on Friday with a spelling dictation test. All students will be requried to take the dictation test and will recieve two grades. One grade will be given for the spelling words and one grade will be given for the dictation sentences including punctuation.
Spelling is an important skill that is necessary in all subjects and one that we will study weekly with the expectation that students will apply what they learn in everyday applications. Spelling should be learned and applied, but not forgotten.
As we begin the third trimester, we will be focusing heavily on prefixes and suffixes and how they change or add to the meanings of words.
