Grade 2 Homework and Information

Week of June 1, 2009
Story:  The Butterfly Seeds

We did not finish the story last week.  We will complete the story and have 
our test on Wednesday.

Vocabulary:
tossed:      moved up and down on a ship because of the waves
passengers:  people who travel in a vehicle.
harmonica:   a musical instrument played by blowing air into and out of slots
inspectors:  people who look at things closely.
alley:       a narrow street between buildings
vendor:      a person who sells things


Read story at home - Tuesday

We will begin:  A Very Important Day
This story will continue into the week of June 8th

Vocabulary
apologize:         to say you are sorry
Congratulations:   good wishes given to someone when something nice has 
                   happened
courthouse:        a building where the offices of a government are located
certificate:       a written statement
examiner:          someone who questions or tests in a in a careful way
oath:              a promise a person makes to tell the truth
loyalty:           strong and faithful support


Test on Wednesday.  Be sure to reread the story on Tuesday night!

Story:  New Hope

Definitions to know:

recycling:   using throwaway items for another purpose
ferried:     carried across a body of water
brisk:       quick and lively
bustling:    busy
invitation:  a written request to do something
citizens:    people who live in a town or city

Story:  A Place Called Freedom

Vocabulary

plantation	a large farm worked by people who live there 
weary		very tired 
sturdy		strong; well-built 
fretted		to become worried 
settlement	a small village for group of houses 
celebrate	to give a party 

Additional words to know:

big house:       The house on a plantation in which the owner of the 
                 plantation lives.
drinking gourd:  The hard-shelled fruit of a vining plant that is hollowed 
                 out and used to dip water.
by and by:       Soon
stable:          A building in which tame animals, especially horses are 
                 kept.

Wednesday:  Read the story.

Thursday:   Test over story and vocabulary

Story:  Dreamplace

Vocabulary

tourists:  people who travel for pleasure or to learn.
hearths:   the floors of fireplaces.
mesa:      a hill or mountain with a flat top and steep sides
canyon:    a deep valley with very high steep sides
harvest:   crops that are gathered
dwelling:  a place where a person lives
withered:  dried up


Wednesday:  Read story at home

Thursday:  Test over vocabualry and story
