Science Curriculum
Children have a natural curiosity about their surroundings. They have a
desire to explore and investigate, see inside of things, find out how things
work, and find answers to their questions. Learning about science provides
a framework for students to understand and interpret the world around them.
The study of science also provides the opportunity to associate God, the
Creator, to the world in which we live and establishes in the students’
minds the responsibility of stewardship.
The elementary science program engages students in a process of inquiry and
problem solving by which they develop both knowledge and skills. The purpose
of the program is to encourage and stimulate student learning, nurture their
sense of wonder, develop skills and confidence in investigating their
surroundings and build a foundation of experience and understanding based
upon Catholic teachings. Upon this foundation later learning can be expanded.
The elementary science program helps prepare students for life in a rapidly
changing world – a world of expanding knowledge and technology in which new
ethical challenges and opportunities continually arise. Tomorrow’s citizens
will live in a changing environment in which increasingly complex questions
and issues will need to be addressed. The decisions and actions of future
citizens need to be based on an awareness and understanding of the world and
the ability to ask relevant questions, define problems, seek answers, and
find solutions that integrate with a faith based knowledge system.

Students in grade eight study the ideas, issues, and events from the framing of the Constitution up to World War I, with an emphasis on America’s role in the war. After reviewing the development of America’s democratic institutions founded on the Judeo-Christian heritage and English parliamentary traditions, particularly the shaping of the Constitution, students trace the development of American politics, society, culture, and economy and relate them to the emergence of major regional differences. They learn about the challenges facing the new nation, with an emphasis on the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War. They make connections between the rise of industrialization and contemporary social and economic conditions.
