My name is Mike Tickler. I am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-
LaCrosse, with a major in Business Administration and a minor in
Mathematics. My wife Peggy and I have been married for 40 years, have raised
two children, and have 3 grandsons.
Both of our children graduated from St. Francis of Assisi School.
Professionally, I worked in the commercial banking industry for 25 years. I
made a career change ten years ago and began teaching. I have taught for a
total of ten years. Five of those years, I taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra,
Geometry, and Algebra Support at Ygnacio Valley High School. I am currently
in my fifth year at St. Francis, teaching Pre-Algebra for 7th and 8th
grade. I also do math tutoring during the school day for 5th through 8th
grades.
My goals for both Pre-Algebra classes are as follows:
1) That all students begin to develop a comfort level with using their math
skills as a part of daily life, and that they do not see it as a difficult
subject that they avoid;
2) That all students develop literacy skills in math, that is, the ability
to read about the subject, and summarize their thoughts through note taking
and verbalization of those thoughts;
3) That all students develop organizational skills and personal
responsibility for the work that they do.
