Reading Intervention Program K-5
During the 2011-2012 school year,
St. Gregory's School will implement a new Reading Intervention Program. This program includes:
Time allotted is in addition to regular classroom reading instruction (3-4 times a week)
Strong ongoing reading program in the classroom
Small pupil-teacher ratio
Accelerated learning strategies are used; not a slower-pace "remedial" approach
Strategies support reading connected text
Teaching materials are carefully se
lected and sequenced in difficulty ("leveled") to insure student success
Instructional procedures begin with a great deal of teacher support that is gradually withdrawn to allow for student independence
Routine is predictable and consistent and includes reading, working with words, and skill-based web sites
Grade level goals outlined on Mrs. Fahrner's web pages
Assessment is efficient and ongoing, including classroom observation, discussion, and performance assessments
Primary students expected to read on the Raz-kids site twice a week, and practice Dolch Sight Words until mastered
4th and 5th students expected to incorporate skills learned into their classroom work, and encouraged to practice skills linked on their grade level page

RTI
Response to Intervention (RTI) is
a multi-step approach to providing services and interventions to struggling learners. RTI allows for early intervention by providing academic and behavioral supports instead of waiting for a child to fail before offering help.
