What are the hours for Kindergarten?
8:00-2:30
We have a very full academic program in the morning, and an afternoon
of enrichment.
Day Care is available both before and after Kindergarten if needed.
About half of our students go to Day Care after Kindergarten.
Do Kindergarten students wear a uniform?
Yes! Kindergarten students wear the school uniform. There are many
options that can be worn including some special shirts that can be
worn on Fridays. Formal uniform is required about once a month when
we go to special functions or school Masses. The complete uniform
guidelines are in the Parent/Teacher/Student Handbook.
Laced or velcroed tennis shoes, and socks need to be worn to school
every day. No other shoes are allowed on any day.
Do Kindergarten students learn how to read?
The Language Arts program includes the Open Court phonics based
instruction and is supplemented with guided reading activities that
expose students to words, poems, and stories. If a student is
developmentally ready, these classroom experiences will give them the
skills to begin to read in Kindergarten. Most Kindergarten students
are beginning readers by the end of the year. However, some students
need a little extra time and don't begin reading until first grade.
What end of year activities are planned?
The end of the school year has some exciting events for Kindergarten
students.
In May we will go by bus to the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific.
In June we will participate in the school's annual Field Day. This is
an on campus Sports Day. At the end of the school year we will have a
Kindergarten class picnic at Evergreen Park. Families are invited to
attend. Finally, the Kindergarten students will have a very
special Graduation ceremony in the church. Students will sing, pray,
and share some of their special Kindergarten memories. There will be
a reception following. This is the last day of school for
Kindergartners.
Check the calendar for the specific dates and times for these events.
What is the process for enrolling a new student?
Students need to be 5 years old by September 1 of the year that they
are entering Kindergarten. The process begins in January with a New
Parent information evening. Check the parish bulletin or call the
school office for the exact date. The School has its annual Open
House during Catholic Schools Week which begins the last week of
January. New families are invited to visit the school during Open
House. The application process begins in February. Birth
certificates and immunization records are required. An appointment is
made for you to bring your child to an assessment screening. The
process takes about 20 minutes. The date for the screening is in
early March. Notification of acceptance letters are mailed
around Easter. There is always a New Parent Information Morning in
early June for parents of incoming Kindergarten Students. Parents are
welcome to contact the school for a tour, a classroom observation, or
to request to speak to one of the Kindergarten teachers. Emails can
be directed to the teachers via the school website, or this website.
