What is the Speech and Language Program?
The Speech and Language Program has been a part of St. Juliana School for
nearly a decade. The program's primary goal is to strengthen and enrich our
students' communication skills. More specifically, the program's mission is to
provide support to students who struggle with speech production, language
expression, language comprehension, voice production, fluency of speech,
social skills and to provide academic assistance.
Why does St. Juliana School need a Speech and Language
Program?
Learning to communicate is an essential part of growing up and
succeeding in school and life. Young children who demonstrate delayed speech
and language development are at a greater risk than their peers of developing
problems learning to read, write and spell. Early intervention is the key to
our program. The vast majority of students involved in the program are in
kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades. Most students are identified early, given
the opportunity to learn the skills they need and graduate from the program
before becoming upper graders. It is important to note, however, that the
program is available to support 'older' students whenever necessary.
Who Runs the Program?
My name is Jamie Flynn and I am a licensed and credentialed Speech and
Language Specialist. I have 20 years of professional experience working with
children who struggle with communication skills and I truly love my job. Some
people joke that anyone would love a job which involves laughing with
children, playing games, and giving out stickers, prizes and candy. In my
defense, all of my students have goals to work on, homework to complete and
nearly always make exceptional progress. The secret to my students' success is
simply ....my students' parents and the fact that they make sure their
children do their speech homework. It is truly as simple as that! I am looking
forward to another wonderful year at St. Juliana School.
