STATE FLOAT

Steps to create a state float:

•	Select a state to study.
•	Research your state, send to information bureaus in the state capitol for information, and          
research in the library.
•	Purchase a 1/2 to 1 inch thick piece of Styrofoam from a craft store or building supply store. 
(Your float should be at least 15 by 15 inches)
•	Cut out the shape of your state using the Styrofoam. (I used a pumpkin cutter to easily cut out 
my float)
•	Use your research to add the geographical and topographical land features of your state.
•	Your float should include the state capitol, important places, industries, crops, resources, etc.
•	These items should be clearly labeled.  (This could be a label on toothpicks, index cards cut to 
fit on the structure, etc.)
•	You can add trees, buildings, mountains, rivers, valleys, major historical events, etc., anything 
that will help you depict the state.
•	Your state must be turned in on time;
•	 Due Date January 15, 2010.
•	Have fun and learn lots about your state.


                                                 BOOK JACKET  BOOK REPORT

                                             GIVE YOUR BOOK A NEW JACKET !

Create a new book jacket for your book.  You may use drawings, stickers, pictures cut out 
of magazines(only with parents O.K.), or photocopies.  Create a front pictures with a clearly 
stated title and author.
	
Next, create the back of your cover.  This must include a short biography of the author.  It 
may also include a picture, map, diagram, etc. that will help you understand the author or 
book.
	
	Now, create an evaluation of the book.  Do you recommend it.  Look on the jacket of 
the book you are reading and see if newspapers or other authors have evaluated your book.  
These need to be your opinions of this book.

	Finally, you will write a summary of the story.  This  will be placed on the right hand 
side of the inside and must include a character sketch of one of the principle characters, a 
description of when and where this book takes place, and anything other interesting facts 
that you wish to include.

                                                        ECONOMY QUILTS


MATERIALS:
			ruler
			markers
			crayons or colored pencils
			construction paper 12x18 inches

GETTING STARTED:

			Use an encyclopedia, almanacs, and /or other reference books, as well as the 
Internet to research your state’s economy.  List materials, industries, and services that 
bring money into your state.  Agriculture, industries, tourist trade, etc.


HOW TO:

			1.	Choose eight items from the list you have created about your state’s 
economy.  For each of these items, create a repeating pattern that you will draw and color 
in one of the eight areas on the construction paper.  The pattern will look like a cloth swatch 
or quilt.

			2.	Use the center area to clearly label your state.

			3.	Be sure to put your name and number in the lower right hand corner.

  ************RUBRIC FOR CLASSROOM, HALLWAY AND FIELD TRIP BEHAVIORS**************


	My classroom discipline plan is a system that allows me to clarify the behaviors I 
expect from the students in my classroom and clarifies for the students what they can 
expect from me in return.  The goal of my discipline plan is to have a fair and consistent 
way to establish a safe, orderly, positive classroom environment in which I can teach and 
students can learn.  All students are expected to display positive Christian behavior that 
respects the dignity of peers, teachers and themselves.  

CLASSROOM RULES

	Follow Directions and be on task.
	Speak in an appropriate manner and use no put downs, bullying, or swearing.
	Have all needed work, supplies, etc.
	Be respectful of all others.  (See Handbook page 17)
	Be respectful of other’s property.
	Appropriate uniforms must be worn at all times, they must be clean and in good 
         repair and socks must cover the ankle while shoes must be tied securely to the 
        foot.  (See Handbook page 27 and 28)
	Student desks must be kept clean and in order.

CONSEQUENCES
	
	Students choosing to not follow these rules will be given tickets.   Three tickets in a 
day for the same poor choice will result in a detention.  Any student who receives more 
than 5 tickets in a week will receive a detention.  Four detentions in a quarter will result in 
the need for a conference with parents and student.	
	Anytime during the week I may call parents to keep them updated as to their 
student’s behavior or grades.  Students may be required to write their parent’s a letter 
when poor choices are made.  

REWARDS

  The students may earn yellow tickets that are put into a basket for a grab bag.  The grab 
bag has 1/4 homework passes, pens, erasers, fancy pencils, koosh balls, and other fifth grade 
appropriate prizes.

					CLASS POINTS

	Positive class points are given when students are on task, following directions, or 
being a good citizen.  These points are on going.  When the class receives 100 points we 
have an extra PE class, a free recess, free talk time, extra reading time, a dropped 
homework assignment, etc.

HOMEWORK
	
	Homework is the closure to the day’s learning.   It is assigned daily except the eve of 
holidays.   In general, students will be assigned somewhere between 30 to 60 minutes 
of work.  It is very important that each student completes each homework assignment 
himself or herself, and on time.  Each day that work is not completed and handed into the 
teacher, the grade of that paper will be dropped a letter grade.  Students will be required 
to remain in the classroom during recess and return to the classroom after lunch if they 
have missing homework or are behind in class work.
	Any student who chooses to not turn in missing homework within a five day span of 
time will receive no more than 50% for that assignment, after 10 days the student will recieve a 
0 and will not be allowed to recieve a grade for that paper.  When a student is absent they will take 
all tests on the day that they return to school.  The only exception will be students that have 
missed over a week of instruction and then that student will take their tests on the third day back 
from their absence.
	If the student is going to be missing days for vacations, family outings, etc.  no class 
or homework will be provided until the student returns.  Then the student must complete 
all work in the same amount of days as missed days.  There will be no exceptions made. 
(See Handbook page 15)
	All homework must follow the homework rubric.  It must be completed in blue or 
black pen, cursive writing, on clean neat unfolded paper, and use the page set up rubric 
given to the students along with this packet.  All math work must be completed in pencil 
and show all work used to arrive at their answer.  Text book pages will be completed 
before workbook pages are completed.  All homework must be on time.
	Homework will be posted on the web page and students that are ill are requested to 
print off the web page homework page each day that they are absent.  This is their record 
of needed make up work.  Books will be sent to siblings rooms at the end of the day.  No 
homework lists will be sent home.  			
	All missed work must be turned in by the same number of days that the student was 
absent.  There will be no exceptions.

TESTS

	Tests are listed on the front classroom board a week in advance.  All students are 
expected to record these dates in their agendas.  I recommend that students begin to 
study for these tests during the week end.  Many students benefit by the making and 
using of flash cards, time lines and outlines.  The week end affords students time to work 
on these study guides and prepare more thoroughly for these tests.
	If a student talks during a test they will receive a zero on the test and a detention.  If 
a student is found to be copying work from another student  both students will receive a 
detention and a zero on the work.
	All tests will be graded and returned to students within two days.  Students must have 
a parent sign and date each test and return it the next day.  Students who do not return a 
signed test on time will receive a Work/Study habit ticket and will take one point off their 
conduct grade for that week.

RESPONSIBILITY SHEETS

	Each student will receive a responsibility sheet that reflects their weekly behaviors.  
The report card and this responsibility sheet coincide.  Each section, Responsible Behaviors 
and Work/Study Habits will have a percentage grade listed on it.  The two four week 
responsibility sheets that are for the quarter are worth 100 points for The Quarter.  Each 
time a student receives a negative ticket their percentage will be reduced by one point.  If 
a student receives three tickets in the same behavior or work habit ( EXCLUDING 
HOMEWORK TICKETS), in the same day will receive a detention.  (See Handbook page 20)    
Students who receive 5 tickets in a week will receive a detention. (EXCLUDING HOMEWORK 
TICKETS)  Any student receiving three tickets for missed homework will receive a 
detention and may be required to write a letter to their parents, stay in at recess to do 
work, return to the classroom after eating lunch to do work, or a conference may be 
scheduled with Parents/Mrs. Santoni.   Three homework tickets anytime during the 
quarter will result in a Detention.  5 tickets for out of uniform or inappropriate uniform, shoes, 
shirt, etc. will receive a detention. (See Handbook page 26-28)
	Any student receiving an automatic detention (fighting, spitting, inappropriate 
behavior, etc.) from any faculty or staff member will have 5 points deducted from their 
conduct grade.  Any student who receives a detention(except tardy detentions)  will be 
ineligible for the Falcon Award for that quarter.

ITEMS TO LEAVE AT HOME

	All electronic games, radios, CD players, watches with computers, calculators, or 
games , cell phones, or pagers need to remain at home.  Any of these items found at 
school will be confiscated and held until a parent retrieves it and the student will receive a 
detention.

grade procedures.

MATERIALS NEEDED:	Empty cereal box
					Glue
					Some kind of paper to cover your box with
					Crayons, colored pencils or markers
					Scissors
                                        Computer or typewriter


PROCEDURE;	Read a really fun, good book.
			    Cover an empty cereal box.


YOUR REPORT NEEDS TO BE SET UP AS FOLLOWS:

TOP OF THE BOX:	Title of the book and the author.

BOTTOM OF THE BOX:	Your name and student number and date 

SIDE # 1:	One paragraph to describe the main character.

SIDE # 2:	One paragraph to describe your favorite part of the story.

BOX FRONT:	Color scene from the book.  Use all the area and put in ground, sky, etc.

BOX BACK:	NO MORE THAN 2 paragraphs as a summary of the book, and a picture to 
illustrate the book.

This report is due September 25,2009

On September 25 th. bring in your favorite cereal and a bowl and spoon.  You may bring 
in either a bowl or a box to share with friends.  I will supply the milk.  We will eat cereal 
and share our reports on October 3rd, in the morning.  			

 HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE.
