Journal entry #4 (Use Travel and Fate cards through #17-19)
June 184__
Dear Journal,
We passed Courthouse rock yesterday. Now we've arrived at Chimney rock.
There are lots of names on this rock. We read about someone finding a dog.
Maybe it's Watch, our dog. We'll keep looking. All the mothers sent the kids
out to collect firewood. There are no trees so we could not find any wood.
Our dad told us to find dry buffalo "plops." We did want dinner and a nice
camp fire so we looked and looked and gathered lots of buffalo chips.
When we gathered around the campfire tonight we heard stories about famous
people. We heard the story of Hiram Scott who died on the trail. My mom
asked me to tell another but I was too shy to talk in front of everyone.

Journal entry #4 (Use Travel and Fate cards through #16 p. 8)
June 184__
Dear Journal,
You won’t believe what happened today. The whole train ended up on a small
mountain, Windlass Hill. It was about 300 feet high! It was such a long drop
to the bottom! My dad and the other men in the wagon train had to use ropes
to let the wagons down. Thank goodness we brought ropes with us. Some wagons
didn’t have any, so we shared ropes with each other.
Our dog has disappeared. We were all so sad.
We found springs of water today. The water was so cool and good tasting. We
left a note for wagon trains that might come and stop here like we did. We also
left a message about our missing dog.
My mother fixed a good pot of beans tonight. We sure have a lot of beans, but
we all like them. She put in some wild onions we found along the trail
yesterday. I know mom will give us beans for lunch tomorrow as we walk along
the trail.

Friday May 1 Weekend homework.
Journal entry 3.
June 184___
Dear Journal,
Oh my, this has been such a day. The hot sun beat down on all of us. The
adults, even my mom and dad are crabby and tired. They were not patient with
us kids. They scolded us for playing too much and making even more dust on
the trail. They even said we ate too much.
When we stopped for the night, it was late afternoon. My mom had made some
corn bread the day before. My dad had shot a rabbit and we fried it over the
fire. It sure tasted good. We were very hungry.
The stars were beautiful. We all slept out in the open. We didn’t go under
the wagons.
The next morning we had a quick breakfast. We ate the last of the stale
cornbread. The Larsens shared some milk with three of the families. That was
all they had. We got on the trail again. Again, another hot, dry day was
starting.
My dad said the wagon master told him there would be a river soon. We could
hardly wait.

it as the base of your second journal entry tonight for your homework. Use
Travel and Fate cards #6-#12
Journal entry #2 May 1845
Dear Journal,
This is sure some trip. Crossing the river was some job for everyone! My dad
thought we would lose our wagon. But we didn’t. It took our wagon train 2
days to get everyone across the river.
All the moms sure cooked up a storm for us. My dad made me rub down the oxen
with dry grass. He said the oxen couldn’t keep going covered with all the mud
from the river.
Mr. Larsen shot a deer and we had deer meat for the whole wagon train on the
second night. Some of us kids are getting tired of all the walking and all
the work. My dad says we need to be patient. We still have hundreds of miles
to go before we get to Oregon.

Wednesday April 29
Example of a Journal Entry
May, 1845
My name is Daniel Forester. I am 9 years old. My mom and Dad and my little
sister, Mary, are going to travel to Oregon in a covered wagon. My dad bought
the wagon from a farmer who lived next door to us in Kentucky. I think he
paid $300.00 for it. Dad said it was a good buy.
We were farmers in Kentucky. We were very poor. My parents saved money for
10 years to be able to go to Oregon. My mother asked me to make a list of our
supplies. She cannot write. She never went to school. My dad’s mother
taught him to read and write. My dad taught me to read and write.
We are leaving for Oregon tomorrow from Independence, Missouri. My dad bought
an oxen for our wagon yesterday. Somebody told him that an ox was stronger
than a horse.
I helped my dad fill the water barrel from the camp water hole. After we
filled the barrel my dad saw the sign that said the water was contaminated
with cholera. We will now have to travel for 1 whole day without water. My
mom got tears in her eyes but she didn’t say anything. This is the most
important trip of our lives.
May, 1845 This is the 4th day on the trail. The wagon master, Mr.
Montgomery, said that we had traveled about 54 miles. I have walked all the
way. We have already crossed one river. We are at the Wakarusa River. It
sure is dirty water.

Sarah Elizabeth Wheaton lived in the eastern part of the United States. She
lived close to the coast. She played on the sand dunes when she was a girl.
She answered Papa’s ad. She wanted to move to the prairie. This is a good
guess about her journey westward.
Sarah had to buy a train ticket to Kansas where she would meet Jacob, Anna
and Caleb. Sarah would have had to pack everything she would be bringing with
her. She put her cat, Seal, in a traveling cage.
Sarah probably went south to New Hampshire and then down through
Massachusetts. She probably traveled through the tip of New York. She
probably had to change trains in Pennsylvania.

Reading 1
2 Chr 36:14-16, 19-23
In those days, all the princes of Judah, the priests, and the people
added infidelity to infidelity,
practicing all the abominations of the nations
and polluting the LORD's temple
which he had consecrated in Jerusalem.
Early and often did the LORD, the God of their fathers,
send his messengers to them,
for he had compassion on his people and his dwelling place.
But they mocked the messengers of God,
despised his warnings, and scoffed at his prophets,
until the anger of the LORD against his people was so inflamed
that there was no remedy.
Their enemies burnt the house of God,
tore down the walls of Jerusalem,
set all its palaces afire,
and destroyed all its precious objects.
Those who escaped the sword were carried captive to Babylon,
where they became servants of the king of the Chaldeans and his sons
until the kingdom of the Persians came to power.
All this was to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah:
"Until the land has retrieved its lost sabbaths,
during all the time it lies waste it shall have rest
while seventy years are fulfilled."
In the first year of Cyrus, king of Persia,
in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah,
the LORD inspired King Cyrus of Persia
to issue this proclamation throughout his kingdom,
both by word of mouth and in writing:
"Thus says Cyrus, king of Persia:
All the kingdoms of the earth
the LORD, the God of heaven, has given to me,
and he has also charged me to build him a house
in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
Whoever, therefore, among you belongs to any part of his people,
let him go up, and may his God be with him!"
Responsorial Psalm
Ps 137:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6
R. (6ab) Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!
By the streams of Babylon
we sat and wept
when we remembered Zion.
On the aspens of that land
we hung up our harps.
R. Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!
For there our captors asked of us
the lyrics of our songs,
And our despoilers urged us to be joyous:
"Sing for us the songs of Zion!"
R. Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!
How could we sing a song of the LORD
in a foreign land?
If I forget you, Jerusalem,
may my right hand be forgotten!
R. Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!
May my tongue cleave to my palate
if I remember you not,
If I place not Jerusalem
ahead of my joy.
R. Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you!
Reading II
Eph 2:4-10
Brothers and sisters:
God, who is rich in mercy,
because of the great love he had for us,
even when we were dead in our transgressions,
brought us to life with Christ — by grace you have been saved —,
raised us up with him,
and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus,
that in the ages to come
He might show the immeasurable riches of his grace
in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and this is not from you; it is the gift of God;
it is not from works, so no one may boast.
For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works
that God has prepared in advance,
that we should live in them.
