Week of May 27, 2008 Language Arts Please work with your child on breaking up words into syllables. The rules for syllables: 1. Every syllable must have at least one vowel sound. 2. Divide a word with a prefix, a suffix, or an ending between the prefix, suffix, or ending, and the base word. (Un-friend-ly) 3. Divide a compound word between the words that make up the compound word. (dog-house) 4. When two or more consonants come between two vowels in a word, the word is usually divided between the first two consonants. (hun-gry) 5. When a single consonant comes between two vowels in a word, the word is usually divided after the consonant if the first vowel is short. (lem-on) 6. When a single consonant comes between two vowels in a word, the word is usually divided before the consonant if the first vowel is long. (ti-ny) 7. When a vowel is sounded alone in a word, it forms a syllable by itself. (u-nit) 8. When two vowels come together in a word and are sounded separately, divide the word between the two vowels. (flu-id) 9. When a word ends in le preceded by a consonant divide the word before that consonant. (nim-ble) Math This week’s lessons will build upon earlier measurement lessons by introducing new units, such as grams or kilograms, and liters.
