About Star View

Star View is a dynamic and unique school among the eleven elementary schools in the Ocean View
School District. The District encompasses an area of 15 square miles in west Orange County,
California. Although much of the district is in Huntington Beach, Star View's location allows us to
serve students from Westminster, Midway City, and Fountain Valley. To the north of Star View lies
Little Saigon, California's largest concentation of Vietnamese families and businesses. Our current
population reflects the ethnic diversity of our community: 31% Asian, 15% Hispanic, 50% White, and
4% Pacific Islander, Filipino, Native American and African American. Within our school population of
619, 19 are identified as resource with special learning needs, 1 is a fully included austistic student,
2 are visually impaired, and 110 are English Learners.
The exemplary reputation of Star View shines in our community. The epitome of a model
elementary school, our warm and caring atmosphere is balanced with the highest level of
professionalism and commitment to student success. Star View's dedicated and knowledgeable
teaching staff is among our most valuable resources. Star View teachers pride themselves in
maintaining a high level of expertise based on current practices, often sharing their knowledge
throughout the school and the District. Star View teachers believe their role extends beyond the
walls of the classroom and have a longstanding relationship with our community. Two of our current
teachers were among the first teachers at Star View when in opened in 1965. Two more of our
teachers have taught at Star View for over 30 years and 7 more have been teachers in our District for
over 20 years. The children of former Star View students currently attend Star View and, in many
cases, have the same teachers as their parents. Incredibly, four of our newest teachers are former
Star View students. Star View teachers, impressed with the school's educational excellence,
traditionally enroll their own children at Star View.
Our commitment of children and their education is renowned in our community. A variety of
instructional strategies are implemented to meet diverse student needs, promote student
achievement, foster independence, build character, and encourage life-long learning. Our
standards-based curriculum is constantly evaluated and revised through an extensive assessment
process. New programs are added each year to promote literacy and provide equal opportunities to
all members of our diverse student population. Our academic success is evidenced by the steady
growth of our API scores from 749 in 1999, to 810 in 2000, and 826 in 2001.
On any given day, a visitor to Star View will observe teachers, students, and community
volunteers collaborating to ensure the smooth operation of our site. Star View community members
are valued partners and contribute greatly to the success of our students. Volunteers donated over
20,000 hours of their time last year helping in classrooms, organizing school events, supporting
office staff, working in the library and preparing instructional materials for teachers. Star View's
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), School Site Council (SSC), and English Language Advisory
Committee (ELAC) boast a high level of member participation with regular meeting attendance and a
perspective that enhances school-wide, decision-making and improvement.
Star View's commitment to the success of all students results from an open partnership among
parents, students, community, and our professional staff. Together we work to meet the needs of
each individual in an atmosphere of respect while celebrating our diversity. Our reputation is one of
academic excellence; child-centered, standards-based curriculum emphasizing thinking and
meaning; site-based teamwork and decision making; and instructional practices and promote stellar
academic achievement and life-long learning.
