"MAKE A MILLION!"
4th Grade Cross-Curricular Service Project
The 4th grade has been learning about human rights in Religion class this
semester. We have studied and discussed many issues involving the basic rights
that all humans have, such as life, shelter, health care, education, etc. The
students also spent some time creating awareness posters and thought hard
about how we can each do our part to work for human rights. We will now try
to put religion class into action in the real world through a service project
that will help bring these important issues to life.
Throughout the year at SMA we raise money for the missions, particularly the
children served by the missions, as in the case of the Holy Childhood
Association. An organization right here in our own hometown that also works
for the rights of children, principally their health and well being, is the
Ronald McDonald House.
The Cline family has been personally helped through some difficult times by
this incredible organization. I think it will be a wonderful opportunity for
the students to support the Ronald McDonald house in assisting other children
with health issues, and their families, the way it has helped my nephew and his.
In an effort to make connections across the curriculum, and give meaning to
all that we learn, we will also be tying in our ongoing quest to improve our
number sense. We all have heard people talk about “a million dollars” or
having “a million things to do”, but how many of us have really ever seen a
million of anything? Do we truly understand that kind of quantity? If our
project is successful, the fourth grade hopes to gain that insight.
Beginning this week, and continuing throughout the remainder of the school
year until we reach our goal of 1,000,000, the 4th grade class will be
collecting soda can tabs. The Ronald McDonald House works with local
recycling centers to raise money by collecting tabs from aluminum cans. There
will be a drop box in the 4th grade classroom, and at the end of each week, we
will sort the tabs and record our new total.
All contributions toward helping us reach our goal of 1,000,000 tabs will be
greatly appreciated. Even if we do not make it to this total, we will be
enriched by the experience of working to help those in need. Please also
visit the website below to find out more about the Ronald McDonald House and
how you can donate or volunteer in other ways. It truly is a worthwhile cause!
