Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a great break. I warned the kids that winter break will be here soon and then before they know it, they will be finished with the second half of the trimester. With that in mind, I move forward to meet as many goals as we can before we go on break in just a few short weeks. The kids seem eager to learn as much as I can teach them. They were full of questions on our first day back. This is just one reason why they are a pleasure to teach.
In math, we quickly reviewed how to multiply mixed numbers and the we started learning about dividing. The kids came up with the algorithm based on problems I posed. The goal is always that kids will understand what they are doing and will be able to solve a problem multiple ways. It is my plan to take a math test covering both multiplication and division of fractions on Wednesday or Thursday at the latest.
In science, we began our study of the excretory system. This is a very short study but an important one as well. The book only contains a couple of pages of information, so I will supplement the information with outside information and videos. We will take a quiz on the excretory system on Friday along with our usual spelling and roots test.
In social studies, we are beginning a study of the colonies that will take us several weeks. The study comprises 3 chapters. At the end of the study, we will complete a project and take a test.
Finally, in reading and writing, we are continuing our study of opinion, which is very similar to "response to literature". The district writing test is not until January to give us enough time to analyze a variety of narratives and write responses to what we read. Much of what we read will be short pages that will provide opportunity to analyze and write opinion essays; however, your child will either read Where the Red Fern Grow or Bridge to Terabithia. We will start the novels but won't be able to finish them before break.
As usual, please let me know if you have any questions.
