December 12, 2017:

The Annual Toy Drive ends on Friday, December 15th. If you are able to donate a new or gently used book or toy for our school's toy drive, please have your child bring the item(s) to school by Friday.  It can be something like crayons and coloring books, decks of playing cards, stuffed animals, anything that would bring children in difficult situations some happiness this holiday season. After having read and seeing the movie, "WONDER" and sharing with our students about compassion for others; it is our hope that we can put our beliefs into action by donating items for children/families in our community. Stores like the Dollar Store, Five Below, and Big Lots, have many toys and games that are inexpensive! We have so much to be thankful for and we just want our students to be able to spread some of that joy and demonstrate compassion in action.

Sincerest thanks,
Mrs. Calonge

Friday, December 8, 2017:Family Life instruction continues. Please discuss with your child what we covered each day! Yes, I know it's 'uncomfortable,' however, you are their moral/family leader and can discuss topics that I, as their teacher, are not permitted to in a school setting. This is such an important part of their lives!!
-Math: Chapter 1 Math Test will be taken on Tuesday, December 19th, BEFORE Winter Break. Please make note of this!!
-HW: Ch 1 Math Quiz coming home today! If your student scored <70%, a parent signature AND corrections are due by Tuesday, 12/12. Up to 70% regrade is possible. Begin to review for the test: Take Self-Check quizzes online at connected website, review notes, assignments, etc.
-Science:
HW: NONE. Family Life is graded as "CLASSWORK" 25% of their overall grade. It is important that students are present for instruction, follow classroom/school policies and procedures, and behave in a mature manner during the course of instruction.

December 1, 2017:
WOW!! Can you believe it's already December!!! Time is flying so quickly!  I wanted to relay some important items to you as our week comes to an end:
1) Family Life begins today. Mr. Abril will be instructing the boys in my HR/SW classes, while I teach his girls.  Please discuss with your child the topics that we cover over the next 11 days. Yes, I know it's 'uncomfortable,' however, you are their moral/family leader and can discuss topics that I, as their teacher, are not permitted to in a school setting. This is such an important part of their lives!!
2) I have extended until Monday, December 4th, the corrections and parent signature for the Chapter 6 Test for those students scoring below 70%.  It is critical that the concepts are mastered and also, it's the first test of the second trimester. Upon completion of the test corrections and verification with your signature, I will regrade your student's test for up to 70%.
3) On December 15th, this website will no longer be updated with homework, the link that will direct you to my homework is:
 https://docs.google.com/document/d/170rxAnBLYzYZ5PiNoSk_FdSbHYo2aXnDhcR8YaeqYo4/edit?usp=sharing
The District is going to a new format/website in the Spring.  The links will still be functional, but I will not be able to update my website. I have already begun to use this link/document!  Please encourage your child to write in his/her PRIDE Planner each day as well. While it is my goal to remember 100% of the time to update my homework, there may be days when I am absent or forget!
4) Mrs. Kvalheim and I do NOT celebrate with a holiday party for our students. However, we do have a breakfast and movie period the last week before we leave for vacation.  Mrs. Kvalheim will be sharing this information with the students in the next week or so. It usually is a potluck and choice of two movies (G or PG rated): one is typically NOT a holiday movie and the other one is a winter/holiday theme that the students vote on.  If you are available to help us, please reply to Mrs. Kvalheim's email/notification.

As always, please feel free to email me or phone the school should you need to discuss any concerns or questions.

Mrs. Calonge

November 17, 2017:

Wishing you and your families a wonderful vacation/holiday. Hoping it is a time for rest and/or fun!! I am so thankful for your support!! We've got work to do when we return, for sure, and a vacation is definitely what is needed to recharge ourselves for the challenging months of December-February!!

"WONDER" field trip is on Tuesday, November 28th. PLEASE make sure you are here before 7:30am that morning. The bus will leave promptly in order for us to get to Victoria Gardens by 8:15am. Chaperones, please check in at the office, park in the upper parking lot, and report to Mrs. Calonge's/Mrs. Kvalheim's classrooms by 7:30am! You may want to carpool to the theater as a group!

November 12, 2017:
FINALLY!! Whew, that was a lot of grading to get caught up on, and it's done and recorded in AERIES.  I appreciate your patience as I slogged my way through the work that was done in my absence.  Please review your child's grades in AERIES for math and science.

There are some troubling trends in math that have me concerned as we finish chapter 6 and take the test on Thursday, November 16th.  I noticed that many students have NOT been completing the math homework, nor seeking help when they aren't sure about the lessons (during class or before/after school).  There is a seemingly direct correlation between the mastery of the lessons through the practice that the HW assignments provide and the performance on the Chapter 6 quiz that was given on November 3rd.  Please know that I do my best to work in 10-15 minutes each day for your student to get started on the math assignment, so that if he/she has any questions, they can be answered with me in the room.

This time of the year begins one of the most challenging because we hit the second trimester with more difficult content and the many 'starts and stops' with holidays, minimum days, etc.  It is critical that students realize that November through February is where they need to focus their attention on the academic side of school. Many of our students have become much more social and have lost some of that initial focus that helped them succeed during the first trimester. I would appreciate your help in reminding your child to seek help, refocus his/her efforts through the next few months, and to realize that it's early in the trimester and there is plenty of time to bring up grades that appear to be lower than desired.  With late work being accepted for partial credit this trimester, it is imperative that students turn things in on time, neatly, and completely, with their NAMES on their papers.

FAMILY LIFE Consent is required if you DO NOT want your son/daughter to participate. As of November 9th, I have not received any forms indicating that students are being exempt from the FLE instruction beginning in early December. If this is not the case, please send in the consent form indicating you do NOT want your child to participate. Materials will be available for viewing November 27-December 1, with consent forms due by December 1st.  It is the intention of the 7th grade science teachers to begin on Monday, December 4th.

Please consider donating canned/boxed food items for the Food Drive sponsored by our Leadership students. I know that this act of kindness will go a long way to help those in our community struggling during the holidays.

Let's finish this week strong!!!
Mrs. Calonge

October 25, 2017:
ALL STUDENTS: "WONDER" field trip form and $10 donation (thank you) are due by November 6th! Please sign and return the BLUE form as well. The permission slip and donation need to be turned in to the office with Mrs. Burkhard-before/after school or during lunch. We are so very excited to provide this opportunity to our students as we finish reading and discussing the book and its themes of friendship, character, and hope!!
-Math:
This has been the student's homework since Monday: "ALL students need to get their chapter 5 math test signed and return it by Wednesday, 10/25."
Students will be calling home to report to you their scores and to inform you of their lunch detention if they are not signed and returned by Thursday, 10/26. Due to my absence, I am giving them ONE MORE DAY!! It is imperative that your student communicates with you his/her grades on a regular basis and that AERIES is being checked by an adult.

FAMILY LIFE CONSENT FORM: The form was sent home with students this week. This year's consent form is different due to State legislation, it is an OPT-OUT ONLY form. Meaning, it only is returned if you do NOT want your son/daughter to participate in the program. The preview of materials is available the week of November 27, 7:15am-3:45pm, at the school. The OPT OUT form is due by Friday, December 1st. Your student will be included in the program/instruction if this form is NOT returned.

Donations of $10 ($7.09 for the movie ticket and $3.00 for bus transportation) are being requested.  Please submit the completed permission slip and donation to Mrs. Burkhard in the Summit Office by Monday, November 6th. THIS IS A DEADLINE that MUST be adhered to. I will have to purchase tickets/swap out passes and prior to Thanksgiving.  Please NOTE that this is NOT a grade level field trip, it's just my class and Mrs. Kvalheim's class that are going. October 8, 2017:

GRADES have been updated to include Friday's chapter 5 Math Quiz and the work completed for the week of October 2nd. The first trimester is nearing its end and students must make every effort to finish their assignments to the best of their abilities, turn things in with their names, and study/prepare for the upcoming quizzes and tests in  math and science.

Math:
We will finish Chapter 5 and take the test before the end of the trimester. There will NOT be time for students to request to retest. It is imperative that students review the quiz that will be handed back tomorrow, study each night, and ask for help when needed.  The students will also be turning in the notes for chapter 5 when they take the test.

Science:
Students will be taking the Section 4-2 quiz on Thursday, 10/12, with their foldable notes. This will also be turned in for grades.  We will also be completing the last section before taking the chapter test by the end of the trimester. Students will be using their notes for the test for all three sections of the chapter. The students' Solar Oven Reports are slowly being graded and will be included in the trimester grade.

Please feel free to contact me regarding your child's progress at sandra_calonge@etiwanda.org.

September 23, 2017:
Due to two field trips on Thursday, September 28th, I'm going to have to reschedule our Solar Cooker S'mores due date to Friday, September 29th. I apologize for not notifying you yesterday. I was busy with "mom" duties for my younger son at the high school for band and the EHS Homecoming as a chaperone and didn't get home til very late. Your student may still bring their project in on Thursday, we'll just be hoping for NO winds and full attendance on Friday, 9/29.
Sincere Apologies,

Mrs. Calonge

Tomorrow in math-we will be doing a "scavenger hunt" activity that uses a QR scanner on the students' phones....It is NOT required, and most apps are free and can be downloaded with minimal memory usage.  We don't use phones very often in class, and it's a FUN way to review the fractions lessons we've done before moving on to the next few lessons to finish up the chapter.  Just wanted to give you a heads up!!
