August 2013
Dear Seventh Grade Parents/Guardians and students,

Welcome to Seventh Grade! If this is your first year at Summit, welcome
to an awesome intermediate school. I think you will find Summit one of the
friendliest places in town. I will be your (child’s) teacher this year and
will
have the pleasure of guiding you (them) through our California state
standards based language arts and social studies programs. It is my goal to
help students become good citizens, lifelong learners, and healthy, caring,
and intellectually reflective individuals.

I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself. I
have been in the district for eight years and in 7th grade most of that time.
I chose this district because it is in direct alignment with my philosophy in
education. I invite you to read the mission statement found in my classroom
or on the district website: www.etiwanda.k12.ca.us.

I find this age group unique with special attributes only a budding
teenager could have! I enjoy the challenges that emerging young adults
present and look forward to helping them realize their individual potential.

On a personal level I can tell you about my wonderful family; my three
children ages 22, 20, and 16. Two girls on each end of a boy in the middle.
Even though the older ones are responsible for themselves, we are busy like
most families after school with homework and extra curricular activities. My
three kids are some of the neatest and nicest people I have ever been lucky
enough to have in my life! They are the best reasons to go home to every
night and I am extremely grateful for each of them.

One of my own favorite extra curricular activities is the volunteer work
I do at Valencia Commons Senior Residence. I spend time every week visiting
and playing games with the residents. It is a very rewarding experience to
add richness to the lives of these fine people. I have been able to introduce
some of our students to my friends there through our school's Rachel's
Challenge program. We have enjoyed a competative game of Bean Bag Baseball. I
would encourage anyone to experience the joy I receive from having this
involvement. Please ask me anytime to help you become involved.

I look forward to meeting each and every one of you at Back-to-School
Night, on Aug. TBA, and working with you to channel the energy of
your seventh grader toward academic and social success! Please know that I am
here for you and your student and you may contact me any time. Preferably
through my email: laurie_muratalla@etiwanda.org, or call the office: 899-1704
and they will
forward your message.

Very sincerely yours,

    Laurie Muratalla
