August 2017

Dear Sixth Grade Parents/Guardians and students,

Welcome to Sixth Grade! Welcome to an awesome intermediate school! I
think
you will find that Summit is one of the friendliest places in town! I
always
have and
that's why I choose to teach here! :)

I will have the pleasure of guiding each new sixth grader through
our
California
Common Core language arts and social studies programs. It is my goal to
help
all
students become good citizens, lifelong learners, and healthy, caring, and
intellectually
reflective individuals.

I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself. I
have been in the
district for eleven years. As I mentioned, I chose this district because
it
is a great place
and it is in direct alignment with my philosophy in education; I invite
you
to read about it
in the mission statement found in my classroom or on the district website:
www.etiwanda.k12.ca.us.

I find this age group unique, with special attributes only a budding
teenager could have! I enjoy the challenges that emerging young teen-agers
present and look forward to helping them realize their individual
potential.

On a personal level I can tell you about my wonderful family- my
three
children ages 2, 24, and 20; two girls on each end of a boy in the middle.
My three kids are some of the neatest and nicest people I have ever been
lucky
enough to have in my life! They are each unique and amazing in their own
way!

One of my favorite extra curricular activities is the volunteer work
I do at Valencia Commons Senior Residence. I spend time once a month
visiting
and playing games with the residents. It is a very rewarding experience to
add richness to the lives of these fine people. I have been able to
introduce
some of our students to my friends there through our school's Rachel's
Challenge program. We have enjoyed their company through a competitive
game
of Bean Bag Baseball! I would encourage anyone to come out and experience
the joy I
have found from befriending these folks. Please ask me anytime to help you
become
involved. I also have one extra credit opportunity if students choose to
visit and play along on the first Saturday of each month. (I will provide
more information upon request.)
A couple of my other exciting hobbies are line-dancing and Mountain
biking. Sometimes I even ride my bike to school on Fridays!

I look forward to meeting each and every one of you at Back-to-
School
Night on TBA, and working with you to channel the
energy of your sixth-grader toward academic and social success! Please
know
that I am here for you and your student and you may contact me any time.
Preferably through my email: laurie_coulter@etiwanda.org, or call the
office: 899-1704 and they will forward your message.

      Very sincerely yours,

                 Ms. Laurie Coulter
