Welcome Back Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,

Hello and welcome to the 2017-2018 school year and 7th grade! I am excited to have your child in my class this year. I anticipate a year of hard work, progress, and rewarding experiences for your child. I hope to create a classroom that is full of caring, responsible, and concerned students who take pride in themselves and the work they do.

I strongly believe that achievement is enhanced at Summit, when a partnership exists between parents, teachers, and students, so we can work together hand in hand. Therefore, ongoing communication with you throughout the school year is essential. In the following paragraphs, you will find information pertinent to the operation of my classroom.

Since my goal is to provide an exceptional educational experience for your child, I have certain classroom procedures, consequences, and rewards that are posted and expected to be met and maintained by each student. They are as follows:

ACADEMIC BEHAVIOR

• Be Prepared (Bring pen, paper, books, and other classroom materials everyday).

Try hard.

• Do your own work.

• Complete work on time.

• Ask for help from an adult in the room when needed.

CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR

• Be on time.

Have a positive attitude.

Respect others.

• Keep your hands and feet to yourselves

Use appropriate language—no insults or swear words.

· Do not talk out; instead raise your hand when you have something to say.

· Stay in your assigned seat until the teacher (not the bell) dismisses class.

If the student decides not to follow the rules, the following consequences will be administered…..

CONSEQUENCES

First, receive a warning for inappropriate behavior.
Second, Teacher / Student Conference.

Third, receive a lunch detention.

Fourth, receive a formal after school detention. Parents/guardians are notified of the behavior.
Fifth, the student will be sent outside of classroom for disciplinary action.

o NOTE: Teacher may skip any step or hold a parent/teacher conference at any time, given the severity and/or frequency of violations.

If the student makes a conscious decision to follow all rules, the following rewards will have been earned:

REWARDS

· Verbal Praise

· Positive progress report, note, or phone call home

· Bonuses

· Special Recognition (Student of the Month/Good Citizenship)



Planner:

Each student will receive a Planner and be required to use it daily to record their homework and any other important information provided by the teacher. It is expected that schoolwork will be a priority and will be completed at home if it was not completed in class. One way to play an active role in your child’s education is to check these Planners against your child’s completed homework nightly, to see that all assignments have been accurately completed by the due dates.

Homework:

Homework will be assigned on a daily basis, Monday through Thursday.

  • Daily homework will be posted on the whiteboard, as well as my website.

  • I also strongly suggest your child get the phone number of another student in the classroom to contact in case he/she forgets to write the assignment(s) down or is absent.

  • Homework is due the next day for full credit, unless otherwise stated.

  • Homework may be graded by the teacher, by other students, or simply reviewed and

    recorded.

    Absence Procedures:

    If a student is absent, please refer to the homework & class work listed on the white board or come see me before or after class. The student should collect any handouts/worksheets from the day/s they were absent. They will have one day for every day you were gone to make up any missed work. Once completed, all assignments should be labeled Absent and placed in the Absent Tray. Any absent work not turned in within the allotted days will be considered late.

    Missing/Late assignments:

    Missing assignments will result as a zero in the grade book. Late assignments will be deducted by 10%. (A becomes a B, etc)

    Progress Reports:

    Grades will be available online to keep you informed of your child’s progress. Updates to the grade book are made regularly and will be available to view on your parent portal. Hard copies will be sent home if requested in writing. Official progress reports are mailed or sent home every six weeks.

    Gum Chewing:

    There is no gum allowed on campus. Students who chew gum on campus may receive detention.

    As communication between teachers, students, and parents is a very important link in education, please utilize your child’s Planner, my TeacherWeb website, and my e-mail (address listed below). I have listed several ways in which you may communicate with me and/or monitor your child’s success. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.
