About The Teacher

I came from a sleepy little town called Hermosa in the Philippines where I
lived with my many aunts, uncles, and cousins until the age of five. I came
to the United States in 1976 to live with my parents on Treasure Island
Naval Base before moving permanently to San Francisco in the late 70s. Today,
I live with my wife and enjoy going to the movies, hiking, mountain biking,
relaxing in cafes, perusing around bookstores, and traveling to exotic locales
during the summer months. I am extremely honored to be a part of the
supportive and talented faculty of Sunnyvale Middle School. As a teacher, I
strive to be the best that I can be, and encourage my students to do likewise.
I look forward to a fun and exciting year.

Class Syllabus

Social Studies, Room E-11
Sunnyvale Middle School
Lawrence Vedar

Grading

All students enter the class with an “A” in scholarship and an “O” in both
citizenship and work habits. Students make a choice to keep their starting
marks or exchange them through their own effort and attitude.

Homework is stamped for credit on the day it is due and students are to keep
all work in a binder or folder. Twice a month students are required to
organize and submit a work portfolio accompanied by a grade sheet.

Homework Policy

Students are expected to produce quality work at all times. This includes
daily class work, homework, group work, and projects. Students will be
encouraged to work at their full potential both in class and at home. Key
aspects of success in this class are organization, determination, and a
positive attitude. Homework will be assigned as needed in order to help
support student mastery of the subject matter. Please provide a setting and a
time for homework to be done regularly. Social Studies homework can be
expected approximately twice a week.

There is a penalty for late work, and after a time no credit will be given.
School policy applies in the case of an absence.

Exams and Projects

Tests will be administered per chapter and will contain a variety of sections
including: matching, multiple choice, interpreting graphs, maps, charts,
documents, and short answer items. Students will be given a study guide before
each test and an opportunity to retake a test for a higher score. Projects
will be assigned twice this year, one in December and the second in May.

Assessment

8th grade student assessment will be broken down into four categories: tests,
projects, daily assignments & activities, and homework assignments. Each
category consists of a different weight or percentage of a student’s final grade.
