Parent Permission Slip for Percussion Students

 

At Suzanne Middle School, we are proud to offer students instruction on a large variety of woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments.  Your son/daughter has chosen to study percussion this year in band.  There are some special requirements for all students playing percussion instruments, which you should be aware of in order for your student to begin instruction:

1.        Each student is required to provide his/her own bag with sticks & mallets, metronome, practice pad, and bell kit (or equivalent) for use at school as well as home practice.  This equipment can be purchased at most local music stores.  A list of music stores is at http://teacherweb.com/CA/SuzanneMiddleSchool/Music/.  Each student needs the following items before beginning instruction:
      Drum Sticks:  Vic Firth SD1 General $15
      Bell/Xylo Mallets:  Hard Rubber $25
      Marimba Mallets:  Medium Yarn $35
      Timpani Mallets:  Vic Firth T3 Staccato $35
      Metronome:  Korg $20
      Practice Pad:  6 inch rubber “silent” pad preferred, but Remo is OK.
      Bell Kit $250:  similar to a piano keyboard, but it is a percussion instrument.  It
      must have both naturals and flats/sharps.  A piano at home is acceptable.
Note: Prices are approximate.  Call your local retailer to check exact cost.

2.       All percussion students are required to come after school to attend special percussion classes.  This class is designed to provide more specialized instruction to students on a variety of percussion instruments, which is not available during band class.  Students will learn to be proficient on ALL the percussion instruments: drums, auxiliary, timpani, and keyboards.  Students are graded according to their proficiency on all percussion instruments.  There is no “specializing” on “just snare drum.”  Therefore, attendance at these rehearsals is mandatory.  Note: Students who consistently miss rehearsal may be removed from the class.  Please refer to the calendar on TeacherWeb.com site for dates.
