When you're sick from school, you are still responsible for work missed. In music class, you miss playing with the group. However, you may still practice to fulfill your Practice Card grade. Although it is ideal to practice on the instrument you play in class, you may also study your music and read notes aloud, finger your part, clap & count rhythms, practice articulations/bowings, etc. No excuses! Just play! If I'm absent on Tuesday & Wednesday, can I still turn in my Practice Card? To, get full credit, you must turn in your Practice Card the day you return. Band and Orchestra is a performance based class. Many students are motivated to practice through the use of "Chair Tests." Students receive a grade as well as a rank on this type of playing test. After the test, students are seated according to their performance on the playing test. Here's what I'm listening and looking for during chair testing: Tone - the quality of sound you are producing. Is it a full, open sound? Are you using a full air/bow? Strings: Are you using vibrato? Tune - Are you playing the right pitches/notes? Are you playing in tune? Strings: Are you shifting without "bending" the pitch? Time - Are you playing rhythmically accurate? Are you observing the rests (A.K.A. "musical silence") Touch - Are you observing the dynamic markings? Are you playing with feeling? Are you positioned properly? (sitting up, feet flat, back straight, shoulders down, instrument properly postioned, etc.) I hope this helps you in your quest for a desirable chair. |
