Dear Students and Parents:
I would like to welcome you back from summer vacation to our 7th grade Social Science Program at Sycamore Canyon. The focus of this year will be Medieval and Early Modern Times. The curriculum will focus on the Fall of Rome and the Byzantine Empire, feudalism, Christianity and the role of the church in Medieval Europe, Medieval life, the prophet Muhammad and the teachings of Islam, World contributions of the Muslims, Medieval Africa, Imperial China, Medieval Japan, South America, the Renaissance time period and the Age of Enlightenment. There will be many exciting and interesting activities we will do in Social studies this year.
There are only a few rules that students should follow on a daily basis. Students should be prepared, be safe and be respectful. Students are coming to school to learn and it is important that they come to class on time and be respectful of both their peers in the class and myself. Each student will be treated with respect and it is asked that they respond in a like manner. Students must have the following materials everyday: blue or black pens, and/ or pencils, red correcting pens, a one subject spiral notebook (dedicated to Social Studies only), their pocket folders which will be supplied by me and finally any completed homework or project.
Students will be graded on class work, homework, tests, quizzes, and projects throughout the year. I will be outlining my expectations and giving several survival tips to students during the first few weeks of school. Students will be graded by points and percentages versus weighted categories. The grading scale will be the following:
A: 100-90
B: 89-80
C: 79-70
D: 69-60
F anything below a 60
Extra Credit opportunities will mostly be given to all students as an expansion of a concept the students are currently learning. Students will not be given individual extra credit to raise a grade at the end of the reporting period. Success will be measured throughout the trimesters through effort, daily attendance and on time completion of assignments.
Homework is essential to learning. It is essential that all students dedicate time to completing their homework in an ideal setting. Homework will be given to help further understand a concept we will be covering in class. Homework can be assigned every night Monday through Thursday and occasionally on Friday, when completing a project or when absolutely necessary. It is to be turned in on the specific due date. All homework must be completed either in regular pencil or blue or black pen (typed is fine also). Any assignments completed in another color ink will be returned to the student and asked to be redone. Students will be given the homework in the class and it is encouraged that they use their agenda to write assignments down as it is discussed. Homework will also be posted on TeacherWeb when available. Students must include the proper heading on all assignments. Points will be deducted if the heading is missing or incomplete. The proper heading belongs in the top right corner of their paper as such:
Full Name (first and last)
Class and period
Date
If a student has an excused absence the district policy is that students get as many days absent to complete and turn in both class work and homework. It is the students’ responsibility to utilize their specific class clip board and/or their homework buddy to retrieve assignments. If a student has a question about an assignment then they can come ask me for clarification about the assignments.
Assignments are expected to be turned in at the beginning of the class period each day. The only late work that will be accepted this year is make-up work. If a student does not complete an assignment it will be recorded as a zero. Any work that has been passed back and work that has no name will be placed on the white board in the front of the classroom, until the end of the topic we are studying. At the end of that unit, if papers have not been claimed they will be thrown away. Students who have retrieved a no name paper are to put the proper heading (including the class period) and place into the make-up work box, located on the counter by the front door of the classroom. Students will receive half credit for the assignment.
Students have received either the Glencoe textbook or cd. If your students have difficulty with the cd then please contact Lizz Newmark, our middle school librarian, and she will exchange your cd with a textbook. In addition to the textbook, I will use supplementary materials like Interact, History Alive and DK Eyewitness books. Students will be given district benchmark assessments that will be aligned with the textbook. I will only utilize these scores to assess student understanding. Student scores will not be used as a grade in their report card.
It is essential to have good communication between school and home, so please feel free to contact me if a problem arises, to arrange a conference or just talk. You can leave a message for me at school, at 805-498-1573 x. 259 or e-mail me at: cbartlow@conejo.k12.ca.us I will usually be available before school and after school, as well as lunch.
Please begin this year by sending me an e-mail so I can create contact lists for each individual family according to period. (Please do this again if your child had me last year). Please do not send me the e-mail address it is much easier and efficient to send the actual e-mail versus the address. Any e-mail address you want to receive communication please do so. Please put CVUSD in the subject line, as well as the students name and period that they have social science. In this way I can easily facilitate communication between home and school, for each of my students. Each student will receive one extra credit bonus point when the e-mail has been received by me. If there is a problem with sending me an e-mail, please call me at the above phone number. If you have sent an e-mail and have not heard a response back from me, please follow up with a call. It is very unlikely for me not to respond back to a parent via the phone or an e-mail.
I also have a TeacherWeb page where students and parents a like can access homework assignments as well as handouts that I will down load onto the site After school, on days where it is necessary, I will update the homework assignment page, so everyone will be current on the assignments given, even when a student is absent. Bookmark or add to your favorites the page (I think there is an app for that) indicated below to make daily access to my site as easy as possible. http://TeacherWeb.com/CA?SycamoreCanyonSchool/CareyBartlow/
I look forward to an exciting year with your children and I hope to meet all of you at Back to School Night.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Carey Bartlow
