Kindernews From Blueberry II May 21, 2012 #40 Ms. Nobusada Thank you: Melissa Cooper, for providing headbands for our class play Tanja and Melissa for providing satin ribbon to tie on our masks. Special Events: Open House/Music Night will be May 30th and begins at 6:30. Our classroom will be open for your child to show you some of his/her work. You will have several things to take from the classroom and put away into your car before the music part of the evening begins. The children will then sit with classmates and me in the auditorium for the performance part of the evening. May 24 Wear Blue and Gold, school colors or something that says Thornhill school, like a Walkathon Tshirt. May 29 Wacky hair May 30 PJ Day May 31 Dress up like someone else day (twin/matching day) June 1 Freaky Friday!! We kick it all off Thursday, May 24 with THORNHILL THUNDERBIRDS SCHOOL PRIDE DAY!!?? Classroom News Language Arts We read our first story in the Open Court big book, By the Sea. It was fun to notice visual clues of what sea animal we would see next. Our language arts centers followed our ocean theme, and we began ocean animal stories and pictures. One of the biographies we read last week was about Jacques Cousteau. Science On Tuesday we learned lots of fun water facts. Ask your child to tell you one of them. Science Fair night was lots of fun, and using our senses was not as easy as we thought. Thanks for your help, particularly at the smell center! Curious fingers felt a sponge, starfish, sand, a rubber ray, shell, and an abalone shell at the touch center. A variety of responses came from the taste center to describe the seaweed, ranging from sweet, bitter, salty, oceany, bad to crunchy. Great adjective work! The sound center had imaginations going, but most often heard were waves, dogs, gulls, and voices. To the smell detectives, bravo! Rosemary, cinnamon, basil, garlic, vanilla, and lemon were the scents. We are weaving science into language arts, and learning about ocean animals, and parts of the sea as we share ocean experiences. Math Finally, we used scales to weigh some pattern blocks. For some of us, getting the scales to balance was a challenge. On Wednesday we took our chapter test, and Thursday we began a new chapter on time…speaking of time, we are now counting down the days until summer break. Can you believe there are only 18 days left for us together? SF Opera On Thursday we completed our third, short aria. We also thought of tunes for our lines, but we will have to make a decision whether we want to say or sing them. With Music Night coming in two weeks, we have lines to memorize for those songs, too! Art We painted our masks and made pictures of starfish, sponges and other sea animals with stamps, to be displayed at Open House. Social Studies We continued to listen to biographies and enjoyed reading the biographies written for homework last week!
