Kindergarten homework is meant to reinforce concepts that have already been taught in the classroom. Here are a few homework reminders: ~Children need to use a pencil whenever they are writing letters or numbers. ~Colored pages need to be done with crayons or colored pencils (no pen or markers, please) ~Follow all of the directions on each page. ~Remember that the journal page is your child's practice at stretching words and writing the sounds that he/she hears. ~Remind your child to hand his/her homework (in their homework folder) to the teacher as he/she is walking in the door. We will not know that your child did not turn in his/her homework until we are grading it over the weekend. ~Please check previous homework for notes and remove older work from the folder. ****************************************************************************** We want to emphasize AGAIN; ***** PLEASE DON'T SPELL THE WORDS FOR YOUR CHILD'S HOMEWORK. ***** There is a sequential progression of writing and stages that your child needs to go through before they will be a proficient writer. We need to know your child's developmental stage so we can advance them to the next level. With you spelling the words, you may actually be delaying this process. Please help them of course, but you should be asking them to break the word apart by stretching it. Ask, "How many sounds do you hear?" "What letter makes that sound?" "What sound is the last one?" "Any sounds you hear in the middle?" If they ask you if the sound is a C or K, yes, by all means tell them what is correct. It is alright to help them with tricky sounds such as double oo in book or sh/ch/th. Helping with a sound is completely different than words such as haunted/mountain/restaurant spelled correctly. Please understand, we are not expecting the homework to be spelled correctly. That is not the purpose of journal writing for kindergartners. (The expert words should be spelled correctly). If they are only able to get the first sound, great. If you think we won't be able to read what they wrote, write what it says underneath their writing. Please trust us and you will be surprised how quickly your child is able to write those tricky words. It must make sense to your child or they are not able to take ownership in their writing. Thank you for supporting us in this matter.
