Dear Parents,
We started our week with a Team Kids assembly. This is a month-long service
learning program which empowers students as community leaders. Each week the
students will be asked to serve their community in a different way. This
week, students will be bringing in non-perishable food items and infant
supplies which will be donated to Human Options.
On Friday, we had another interesting assembly called "Science Magic," which
explained how magicians use science to perform their tricks. At the end of
the assembly, the 4th and 5th graders were invited to create an invention for
the Astounding Inventions program. Your child was sent home with a form
which needs to be filled out and returned no later than November 23rd if he
or she is interested in participating.
In math, we continue to study Unit 2 on addition and subtraction of decimals.
This week we will cover Lessons 7-11.
In science, we are studying Chapter 3 on The Human Body, and will be
reading the fourth lesson entitled "The Circulatory System" this week.
In social science, we are reading Lesson 2 in Unit 2, while the students
continue to work on their Explorer Reports. These reports are due on
Tuesday, November 24th. The Explorer Interviews will take place the
following day.
In RTI, we are completing the third story entitled "The Fear Place" in the
anthology, and beginning the fourth story, "Mae Jemison." The students are
developing reading comprehension strategies during the class period, which
will carry over into reading textbooks and other reading genres. You can
help your child by ensuring they have ample time to read at home each night.
In Writing, students are completing narratives, focusing on developing
conflicts. These narratives are due on Wednesday. They will begin
autobiographical narratives on Wednesday to prepare them for the District
Narrative Assessment the following week.
