Ms. Luke's Newsletter

Hello everyone:

We only have 15 more days of school left! Students are working on their last
project in Language Arts – a State Pamphlet. This project culminates on June
1st with our Parade of States Floats. Please talk with your child tonight
about this – it is part of their homework for tonight. You also need to sign a
homework slip stating that you understand the assignment. If you have any
questions, feel free to contact me – also on June 1st, our Parade will be
starting at 10:40ish and we (the fifth grade teachers and students) hope you
can stop by and see our parade!

The students are having a math test today! Then we will be finishing up the
year with a mini unit of division of fractions, adding/subtracting/multiplying
and dividing positive and negative numbers. Students will be taking the UC
Davis Math Project PreAlgebra test on Friday. This is a multiple choice test
mainly to help Ms. Skinner in planning for preAlgebra next year….but you also
will get a copy of the results in the report card packet.

In Social Studies we are finishing up the Unit on Lewis and Clark next week -
and that will be it!

Tonight there is a Board of Education meeting at 7:00. On the agenda is a
discussion on class sizes, budgets, etc. As some of you know, I was rescinded
in April, Ms. Guenther was rescinded last week…..and FYI - Ms. Skinner has
been working in the district long enough, she didn’t get pink slipped.
Currently, class sizes will be up to 34 students year – our site is loosing 3
teachers (in the primary classes) due to class size increases….There will also
be more cuts now that the revised budget has been announced, but not sure what
they will be.

Finally, we have been working on school art projects these last few weeks.
Fifth grade had the honor of creating five feet circular Mandala’s for the
front of the school! They will be placed on the walls in the next couple of
weeks. I will keep you informed and then you can come by and see these
beautiful works of art.

Please mark the following dates on your family’s calendar:

May 28th – Memorial Day – No School
June 1st – 10:40 – 5th grades’ Parade of States
June 1st – 12:30 – 2:30 – 6th grade Carnival
June 5th – Manor Pool – Thanks to Harrison’s mom and Tatum’s mom for
volunteering to walk with us!
June 7th – Last day of school – school ends at 12:30

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

Thank you.

Karen
