Homework is an important part of your child's education.

First it lays the foundation for future assignments and projects your child

will be expected to complete in later grades. Second, it gives you the

opportunity to see your child's strengths and weaknesses in various academic

areas, and support them where thay most need help. Third, it lets your child

know that you care about their education when you expect high quality,

accurate and complete work just as the teacher does. Any student that does

not complete homework as it is due will be required to work at recess time to

complete the assignments.

Homework Activity Descriptions Reading Record: Read daily for a minimum of 20

minutes. Log reading on the reading record. Note the genre of the book

(fiction, poetry, non-fiction, fairy tale, fable...) Pick a day to complete

the writing activity and the word work. Spelling: Each week a spelling list

will be sent home. Using the practice procedure outlined on the homework,

practice the words daily and record on the homework sheet. Math: Your student

may have math classwork to finish as homework (Mon. - Thurs.)based on skills

taught in class. If a student has completed all math in class he/she should

practice basic facts at home by playing one of the math games that will

be/have been sent home. 3rd graders must memorize to automaticity the 1-10

multiplication facts. To receive a 3 on the first trimester report cards they

must know their facts through the threes. 2nd graders must memorize basic

addition and subtraction facts from 1-18. Social Sudies/Science: Your child

should be interviewing an adult and taking notes/ sketching what he/she

learns. Book Reports/ Family Homework: Every trimester students will be

responsible for a prepared book report presentation. In additon, projects

related to the science and social studies curriculum will be assigned

periodically. Instructions for these assignnments will be passed out in class

with ample time for completion. Go to the Dump Directions: From a regular

deck of playing cards eliminate the jokers, kings, queens, jacks, and 10s.

Shuffle the cards. Deal 5 cards to each player. The draw pile goes in the

center of the table and is called the dump. Look through the cards to

find any 2 cards that add up to 10 and set them aside. Now take turns trying

to make sums of 10 by asking the opposing player for cards that will help you

make ten. Example; if you have a 3 in your hand you will need to ask for a 7.

If the other player has a 7 they give it to you and you set aside a sum of

ten. If they dont have a 7 they tell you to go to the dump. You take

a card from the dump and your turn is now over. Play continues until one

player gets rid of all their cards. Sum 20 Directions: From a regular deck

remove the jokers, kings, queens, and jacks. Deal 7 cards to each player. Put

the draw pile in the center. Look through your cards to try to make 20. You

may use any number of cards to do this. When you have a total of 20 you may

lay those cards aside. Play begins by asking for a card that will help you

get to 20. If the player has the card you asked for and you can make 20 you

set the cards aside. If you do not get the card you asked for, you must get a

card from the draw pile. The first player to get rid of all the cards in

their hand by making sums of 20 wins. Places Please! This is a place value

game. Draw 5 lines on a piece of paper ex: ___ , ___ ____ ____ garbage:____.

Now roll a die. You may put the rolled number in the thousands place, the

hundreds place, the tens place, the ones place, or put it in the garbage can

(last line). Both players use the same roll to try to either make the largest

or the smallest possible number. Decide before the game if you will be trying

to make the largest or smallest possible number. When you are finished making

the number each person says the number. To make this more of a challenge go

to the ten thousands place. You may even use a deck of cards with the K,Q,J

and 10s removed.
