Art 1 (9-12)

Basic fundamentals of two-dimensional art with a focus on drawing and painting using a wide variety of techniques and media skills in visual literacy and multi-cultural art.

Art 2 (10-12) (Grade 9 may enter with teacher consent based on their portfolio)

Requires completion of Art 1 and teacher recommendation

Art 2 is an intermediate drawing, painting and design class focusing on the elements of art and design principles.  Collage, mixed media projects and print making will also be included.

3-D Design/Sculpture (9-12)

Three-dimensional design, sculptures and crafts for all levels of art.  Projects will use a wide variety of materials including paper, wood, clay, plaster, wire, jewelry making, etc. 

3-D Design/Sculpture 2 (10-12)

Requires completion of the beginning level of 3-D Design, Studio Art, or IB/AP Art and teacher recommendation based on interview/portfolio

Advanced 3-D design techniques, including jewelry making for the highly motivated student ready to be challenged to the next artistic level.  Students will explore historical, ethic and cultural influences on their own art and others, as well as prepare a portfolio.  There will be many exhibition opportunities throughout the year.

AP Studio Art 3-D Design/Sculpture (11-12)

Requires completion of the beginning level of 3-D Design, Studio Art, or IB/AP Art and teacher recommendation.  Must have at least 3.0 in art classes.

This is an Advanced Placement three-dimensional design program for the highly motivated students.  A college level 3-D program that includes use of wide variety of materials and techniques and styles, critiques, quality production and presentation, plus 3-D art history and multi-cultural studies. Summer project required.  The AP 3-Dimensional Design/Sculpture Exam should be taken near the conclusion of the course.

Studio Art (10-12)

Requires completion of Art I or Art II with a grade of A and teacher recommendation based on interview/portfolio

Advanced drawing, painting, and mixed media program for highly motivated students ready to be challenged to the next artistic level.  Students will experience the use of a wide variety of techniques, materials, styles and exhibition opportunities.  They will be exposed to art history and multicultural studies of art, guest artists and field trips. 

AP Studio Art 2D Design (10-12)

Requires completion of Art 1 and Studio Art with a grade of A and teacher recommendation based on interview/portfolio. 

This is an Advanced Placement drawing and painting program for the highly motivated student to create a very developed portfolio of art using experiences that include a variety of materials and techniques.  There is the development of abilities to self-critique, as well as experiencing other cultures and historical art influences.  Students are expected to take an Advanced Placement Examination at the conclusion of the course. 

IB Visual Arts HL2 (11-12)

Requires completion of Art 1, Art 2, and Studio Art with a grade of A and teacher recommendation based on interview/portfolio.

Advanced program for highly motivated students to create college-level work in studio art setting.  Key components of the class include:  experience with variety of materials, techniques, styles, creative problem solving, critiques, quality production, presentation, art history and multicultural art.  Development of artistic research workbooks.  Opportunities to experience guest artists and field trips.  Will be expected to take IB exam at the conclusion of the course.

Ceramics 1 (11-12)*

Hand-built projects to cover slab, coil, and pinch techniques. Emphasizes quality in construction and design along with glazing.

Ceramics 2 (11-12)*

Requires completion of Ceramics 1 and teacher recommendation

Emphasis on wheel throwing and combination wheel & hand built projects.

Ceramics 3 (12)*

Requires completion of Ceramics 2, portfolio review, and teacher recommendation

Individual contracts allow for students to explore and develop skills.

*Due to space constraints, enrollment in ceramics may be limited by pre-screening methods.

Beginning Choir (9-12)

Requires minimum 2.0

Mixed choir for beginning students in two to four part harmony.  Stresses singing techniques, musicianship, and basic fundamentals.  Students perform in concerts. Attendance at rehearsals required.  Fine arts credit.

Concert Chorus (9-12) (Intermediate Choir)

Requires minimum 2.0 and completion of Beginning Choir and/or audition with teacher consent.

Students will learn the historical significance of music throughout the various eras.  Attendance at rehearsals and students performance in concerts required. Intermediate level choir.  Fine arts credit.  Pending UC Approval.

Advanced Choir (9-12)

Requires audition, minimum 2.0  and teacher consent

Mixed choir for in advanced choral students in three to six part harmony.  Stresses advanced musicianship and technique through an exposure to a broad repertoire of a variety of musical styles.  Students perform in concerts and/or festivals.  Attendance at rehearsals required.  Fine arts credit.

Marching Band (9-12)

Requires minimum 2.0 GPA and teacher recommendation

Emphasizes musicianship: Performances at football games, field show competitions, parades, concerts and festivals.  This is a year-long class. Attendance at after school rehearsals and performances required.  Enrollment in a traditional instrumental music class (Wind Ensemble II, Wind Ensemble I) is also required. PE credit.

Symphonic Band (9-12)

Requires minimum 2.0 GPA and teacher recommendation

Stresses tone production, technique, musicianship and basic music fundamentals.  Attendance at rehearsals and performances is required.  Fine arts credit. 

Wind Ensemble 1 and 2 (9-12)

Requires a minimum 2.0 and audition

Provides an extensive exposure to a broad repertoire of a variety of musical styles.  The groups perform at festival and concerts throughout both Southern California and the United States.  Attendance at rehearsals and performances is required.  Fine arts credit. 

Percussion (9-12)

Requires a minimum 2.0 and audition

This is a two semester course. During the fall, this course functions as the drum section for the Marching Band.  Must be enrolled in the marching band.  During the spring semester, fundamental training in concert percussion is given.  Percussion ensembles perform at concerts, and musicians are auditioned for placement in concert ensembles.  Fine arts credit.

IB Music Solo SL (11-12)

Highly Recommended:  2 years ensemble experience (intermediate level or higher), 1-2 years of private lessons, and recommendation from a private or school music teacher

IB Music prepares students who wish to pursue a degree and/or career in music, composition, or performance.  This course will help students develop a solid base of musical vocabulary, as well as an objective base for evaluating musical styles and interpretations.  A performance/ composition component will be offered which provides experience and teaches high-level music standards.  Full IB students should take the IB Standard Level Music Exam near the conclusion of the course.

Music Appreciation (9-12)

A one year course in the appreciation of music from renaissance to modern music.  Develops a basic understanding and appreciation of the various musical styles.  Covers melody, harmony, rhythm, meter, tempo, dynamics and form.  Students will explore various careers in music.  Meets graduation requirement for one year of visual/performing arts. 

Drama 1 (9-12)

This class is a basic introduction to the world of theatre.  The course includes acting, directing, improvisation, theatre games, and theater history.

Drama 2 (10-12)

Requires completion of Drama 1 or teacher consent/audition

Drama 2 is an intermediate course designed to develop student performance skills.  Improvisational acting, pantomime and movement for the performer will also be covered.  Monologues and scene study will be emphasized.

Drama 3 (10-12)

Requires completion of Drama 1/2 or teacher recommendation/audition

A course covering theater history, play analysis, dramatic criticism and playwriting.  Students will be performing scenes from plays from historical periods.

Drama 4 (10-12)

Requires completion of  Drama 3 or teacher consent/interview/audition

This course is an ensemble production acting class.  Students will concentrate on production elements including directing skills, stage management and theatrical design, as well as acting techniques. 

IB Theater Arts HL 2 (11-12)

Requires completion of Drama III and teacher consent/interview/audition

This advanced course is an ensemble production acting class.  Students will concentrate on production elements including directing skills, stage management and theatrical design, as well as acting technique.

Musical Theater Ensemble (10-12)

Requires audition, teacher approval and minimum GPA of 2.0.

Musical Theater Ensemble is a course in which students will explore acting, singing, dancing, rehearsal, performance and technical/design skills culminating in the production of a full length Broadway musical in the Spring semester.  Students will also learn about the historical and cultural significance of selected musical theater works.
