Units of Study

Please see the links page for great websites that relate to
our areas of study. Our Math book publisher and our Reading book
publisher have great sites. You can even get chapter specific
activities.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Chapter 1 of our social studies book covers the physical
regions of California.

SCIENCE
Our students in fourth grade rotate classes for
science. Mrs. Gilmore's class will first be working on
magnetism activities.

MATH
Our math book's chapter 1 deals with number sense.

LANGUAGE ARTS
Students are reading from our new Open Court reading
series. They will learn to write personal narratives and summarize
chapters as well as do Thinking Maps to demonstrate what they've
learned.

Additionally, students will be reading stories from Jr. Great
Books. We study these stories in depth and work on critical
thinking skills and interpretive questioning.

Grammar topics:

Nouns and Pronouns

Writing:
The fourth graders are taking the state writing test in the spring.
This is a big year for growth in this area. They will be writing
personal narratives, summaries, and responses to literature. Fourth
graders will become experts on these forms of writing by the end of
the year. They will be using rubrics to score sample papers and then
using the rubrics to evaluate their own writing.

Spelling:
Students will take a pretest on Monday mornings. They will be given
a list that day along with a spelling contract to be turned in on
Thursday. Spelling dicatation tests are on Friday mornings.
