The Science curriculum includes study in the areas of physical, life, and
earth science. In PHYSICAL science, we will study matter and the periodic
table of elements as we explore the exciting subject of chemistry. Study in
LIFE science focuses on systems in living things. The fifth grade study of
EARTH science focuses on water and weather. Finally, the curriculum
includes a brief study of the solar system.
We began the year with a study of earth science, specifically water and
weather. We studied various weather patterns as well as predictive
techniques that meteorologists use to forecast. In the second trimester, we
studied Matter, the Periodic Table of Elements, and the difference between
physical and chemical changes. Finally, in the third trimester, we are
studying systems in animals and plants. Scholars are currently working on a
creative product to show what they have learned as an expert on one of the
body systems (digestive, circulatory, excretory, or respiratory).
Ocean Institute Watershed Science Program
For the third year, Wagon Wheel's fifth grade has applied for and been
invited to participate in the Ocean Institute's Watershed Study Program in
Dana Point. Underwritten by grants from miocean and Toyota
USA, our five fifth grade classes will go on two field trips to the
institute.
The first visit was on September 16th as we were scientists aboard the R/V
Sea Explorer as well as in laboratories on land. Following the field trip,
each class will develop a testable question relating to our local watershed
(San Juan Creek) and will prepare a presentation using the Scientific Method
as the framework. We will present our findings at the Ocean Institute in
January 2009 at "The Kids Conference on Watersheds."
This is a great program, and we're honored to be a part of it!
GREAT NEWS! Wagon Wheel has been accepted to participate in the Watershed
Science Program for the 2009-2010 school year!
Throughout the year, we will perform experiments in class and will also
visit our well-equipped science lab (The Campbell Discovery Center) for a
hands-on experience with the concepts we are learning. This is a very
exciting year in science!
