Welcome to Kindergarten in Room K-1.
We are enjoying our camping unit and have been studying about frogs and bears and all kinds of
animal and plant life in the forest. This week we have added learning all about insects and other
creepy crawly creatures.
Our final unit for the year will be a mini unit about the ocean and sea life. Your child will be doing
his/her first science report about an ocean animal. This project also includes making a model of the
ocean animal and giving an oral presentation about three interesting facts that he/she learned about
the sea creature. This project is due on or before May 11th. Look for details in the upcoming
homework packet.
We will begin testing for report cards during the first week of May. Please help your child review
any areas that were not mastered on the interim progress report. We will also be taking the district
writing test so keep working on writing using sound-it-out spelling. Encourage your little writer to
use descriptive words and not to forget to add punctuation at the end of sentences. It is amazing to
see what good writers they have become.
On the last day of school, Tuesday, May 22nd, we will be having some fun outdoor centers from 8:00
to 11:00. The centers include activities such as water games, relay races, bouncing balls on the
parachute, and blowing bubbles. We need parents that are willing to help us with these fun activities.
If you are able to help, please let me know.
Some classroom information:
*Your child will need to bring a folder, a snack and a backpack to school each day.
*When your child wears a jacket or sweater to school please be sure to write your child's name on
the tag. Also write your child's name on his/her lunchbox, folder, and backpack. We want to make
sure that the items go home with the correct child.
*A newsletter will be sent home every Friday. The newsletter will tell you about what we are
learning in the classroom, upcoming events, homework for the week, special items needed in class to
enhance our curriculum and the name of our student of the week. Please try to read this before
school on Monday to find out if your child will need to bring something special to school that week.
*Attached to the newsletter you will find the weekly homework and any special notices or flyers
from the school. The homework will be due every Friday. Homework is part of our report card grades
so I will be grading and recording it each week.
*The SOAR reading log is also part of the weekly homework assignment.
Your child will need to turn in a log listing 7 to 10 books read each week. You may read any books to
your child to satisfy this requirement. Each trimester your child will need to have read 50 books to
earn the Trimester award of a tag and a book. The children also get to eat and play games with Mr.
Lautenslager as a reward for reading. This is a fun time for our students.
*Our class goes to the library every Friday. Please help your child return his/her book each week.
