Reading List Links & Library Links

Mrs. Lock's Favorite Book and Library Websites

The following links will take you to some of the reading-related
websites that I visit the most often. You'll find everything from Newbery
and Caldecott winners lists to lists of books that can help children deal
with tough times.

I try to keep the links on this page as current as possible, but if you find
a link that no longer works, please let me know by emailing me using the
mailbox icon at the top right-hand corner of my library homepage. Thanks,
and happy reading!

The librarians at Morton Grove Public Library in Illinois have
created one of the best web-menus for books that I've ever seen!
Use their directory to search for booklists in over 45 different
categories "Mysteries," "Humor," "Boys," "Girls," "Dogs,"
"Talking Animals," etc.

Margaret Jensen, an award-winning Wisconsin educator who
specializes in new readers, compiled a fantastic list of
books for beginners. Her list is separated into categories for
books with special features like "Rhyme and
Rhythm," "Repetition," and "Sight Words." Parents and teachers
alike will love her reading suggestions!
Great Books For Beginning Readers

This booklist, compiled after Hurricane Katrina by Gale
Crisswell, a Louisiana librarian, contains a wealth of great
titles for helping children come to terms with a variety of
difficult events - from moving and making new friends, to the
death of a loved one or a pet. The links at the bottom of the
page, under RESOURCES, provide even more titles, as you search
for a way to comfort your child during a tough transition.

Create your own customized book list! - Wow, I just
discovered this amazing site put together by Librarian Lisa
Bartle! I entered some interest/search criteria (set in Medieval
England, female main character, suitable for a 10-12 year old
reader), and within seconds, got a list of 7 great titles, all
award-winners. You can enter whatever search criteria you'd
like. This is a GREAT resource for any reader or parent!

hundreds of books you and your child can read online...in Farsi,
Hebrew, Spanish, Tagalog, Russian, German, and many, many other
languages. They are adding new titles all the time. The site is
free, but if you register with them you can create your own

International Children's Digital Library

Loss is a part of life that can be difficult to explain to
children. I'm often asked by parents or staff members if there
are any books I would recommend for someone to use with a child
who has experienced the loss of a loved one, friend, or even a
pet. The Co-operative Children's Book Center at the University
of Wisconsin-Madison has a resource list that I provide. A link
to it is below.
