What is the difference between Magnet, Academy and Musical Theatre?

Musical Theatre auditions are open to ALL STUDENTS on the Millikan campus.
This includes the Magnet & Academy as well as students who do not belong to
any of these programs. Students must audition specifically for this
class. Audition dates for the 2008/2009 school year will be announced and
posted on the calendar when they are scheduled. Incoming 6th grade students
are not eligible to try out. Auditions for this program are only open to
students going into 7th or 8th grade.

The Magnet students are selected by the District Office. To apply for the
Magnet please contact the Magnet Office or the District for more details.
You must fill out the CHOICES application to get into this program.
Admission into the Performing Arts Magnet means that you will be offered
dance instead of P.E., busing transporation if you are out of the area, and
enrollment in an arts elective. You do not need to audition for this
program, but you must fill out the application and be selected by the
district.

Performing Arts Academy students must audition to get into the Academy
program. Even though this is NOT the Magnet program, oddly enough auditions
are scheduled through the Magnet Office. This is NOT the same audition
required to get into Musical Theatre.

Both Performing Arts Magnet and Performing Arts Academy students are
generally enrolled in an arts class and take dance instead of P.E. Other
academies such as Civics and Science have different requirements. The Magnet
Office has brochures explaining the differences. Academy rules and
guidelines are changing this year so it is best to contact the Magnet Office
for the latest information on all academies.

Musical Theatre students take 2 arts classes (vocal and drama) and 1 dance
class daily. This advanced group of students perform 2 musicals per school
year, participate in the dance concert through Ms. Weiss, perform in the
choir concert with Mr. Krubsack and are offered many other performance
opportunities throughout the school year.

What do you make in Costume Design?

We attend 2 competitions a year in teams. Students design, research and make
the costumes themselves. Costume Design also makes, organizes, and works
backstage on costumes for the Musicals. When there is time, we work on
sewing skills, make-up design and craft projects.
