The statue behind is K'ung Fu Tzu (Confucius) who was born in 551 BCE in the state of Lu in China. He traveled throughout China giving advice to its rulers and teaching. His teachings and writings dealt with individual morality and ethics, and the proper exercise of political power. He stressed the following values: Li: ritual, propriety, etiquette, etc. Hsiao: love among family members Yi: righteousness Xin: honesty and trustworthiness Jen: benevolence towards others; the highest Confucian virtue Chung: loyalty to the state, etc. Unlike most religions, Confucianism is primarily an ethical system with rituals at important times during one's lifetime. The most important periods recognized in the Confucian tradition are birth, reaching maturity, marriage, and death.

Confucius (551-479 BCE) is the father of Confucianism, a religion that originated in ancient China. Confucius was a great philosopher and teacher who spoke much about life and law. Many of his sayings are used in daily conversation, frequently without realization of where the sayings actually came from.

Like most other religious figures, Confucius started life in humble beginnings. He was born in the year 551 BCE, in the country of Lu, to a poor family. When Confucius was 24 his mother died. He soon after became a teacher, traveling around and speaking to those who would listen.

News of Confucius' wise sayings spread, and many people adopted his philosophies. When Confucius died temples were built in many cities to honor him. These temples were not used for worship. Rather, they were used as public places to celebrate annual cerimonies. Currently, Confucianism is practiced all over East Asia.

Here are few of Confucius' sayings:

  • Feel kindly toward everyone, but be intimate only with the virtuous.

  • When you see a man of worth, think of how you may emulate him. When you see one who is unworthy, examine yourself.

  • The nobler man first practices what he preaches and afterward preaches according to his practice.

  • What you do not wish done to yourself, do not do to others.

  • The true gentleman is friendly but not familiar; the inferior man is familiar but not friendly.

    Dear Mr. Wu,
My name is Paula Christine and I am the head of a program called Peace Pals at The World Peace Sanctuary in Wassaic,
New York. I met Mary Wright through a World Peace Flag Ceremony and a Peace Pole dedication at
The Rocky Hill School last March 4th as part of her "Go Fourth" program. We have since discussed my attendance
at a Peace Pole ceremony in China next January when Mary will be travelling with the students and parents from
    Rocky Hill School.
Further, we would like to offer a World Peace Flag Ceremony during the Peace Pole dedication as well.
This is a very special ceremony in which all the 191 flags of the member nations of the U.N. are presented
one at a time while the audience sends their wishes for peace to that country whose flag is being raised.
It is a ceremony that has been presented all over the world in settings ranging
from a local school to the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations.
In preparation for my travel plans, I would need to know when the group from Rocky Hill School would be meeting
with school officials and presenting the Peace Pole. Since I am travelling independent of the group,
I need to make separate flight arrangements for the specific time that a Peace Pole dedication and a
World Peace Flag Ceremony could take place. Could you perhaps email me a date when this will happen?
I am looking forward to meeting you and visiting your beautiful country!
May Peace Be In China! May Peace Prevail on Earth!
    Sincerely,
    Paula Christine

The email from the travel agent for US go-fourth school delegation
    Dear Mr Wu:

Thanks for your letter and I am delighted to work with you to organize a fun,
educational and meaningful exchange for the students and educators of Rocky
Hill High School and the students at Zhixin Elementary School, Shaoguan. The
students will arrive the night of January 12 at 2114 and are staying at the
Tongyue Hotel. They will be at the Tongyue Hotel for four nights until the
morning of January 16. On January 16, there are two trains from Shaoguan to
Guangzhou on January 16, one at 0825 and one at 0930 and they will take one
of them. The train to Guangzhou is two hours and twenty minutes. The group
will then have a "dim sum" lunch and fly to Xian. The flight last year was at
1520 and so hopefully the schedule is similar to last years.

I did see your email of August 31 and we are excited about all your
suggestions and we are just going to have a very busy three days. We also
have a VIP Lady, Ms Paula Christine with us from the United Nations and we
would like to do a dedication of the Peace Pole and have a World Peace Flag
Ceremony and maybe this could take place on January 13 along with the Go
    Fourth Ceremony.

The Tongyue HOtel provides the group with breakfast daily.

I look forward to hearing from you so we can coordinate the itinerary.

    With very best wishes

Joanna Cameron, President of Cameron Tours
