Reading Workshop

The magic number for this year is: 40!

That's right - my goal for each student is for them to read 40 books by the end of the school year. I strongly believe that all students have the potential to LOVE reading and I hope to guide them toward reaching their potential. As a student, I was labeled as a "struggling reader" - but now I love reading. I want to share that enthusiasm with my students and hope that by letting them self-select and giving them the time to use the strategies we teach in the classroom, they will be enthusiastic readers by the end of the year and recognize the value of reading for their lifetime.

Here's how we will accomplish this:

  • We will begin and end each day in my classroom with at least 15 minutes of uninterrupted, silent reading.
  • Students will select their own books based on my genre guidelines.*
  • Instead of tests or worksheets, students will be required to keep a Reader's Notebook, give frequent book "commercials", and occasionally write book reviews (not reports).
  • I will respond to responses in their notebooks and have one-on-one conferences with students every two weeks to monitor their progress.

* Parents: monitor what your student is reading and make sure the material matches your family's values.
