FAQFrequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents. If you have a question for the FAQ, send it to beattde@d11.org.
What is the best way to contact Ms. Beatty? The best way is via e-mail at beattde@d11.org. Feel free to contact me for questions. I usually check this address at least once each weekday evening, once per weekend and usually each period during the school day. Her voice mail number is 328-3658 and is usually checked once each weekday. Students NEED a graphing calculator. Calculators today are not used just to cover a student's deficit in multiplication or division or to speed things up. Calculators are used for developing key mathematical concepts like any other mathematical software might be used. The ideal calculator to get is the TI-84 plus. The TI-83 plus is also fine. Older models such as the TI-81, TI-82, TI-85 and TI-86 can do many but possibly not all of the things we use calculators for in class and operate similarly to the TI-83 or TI-84. These older calculators can often be bought cheaply from pawn shops or eBay. For long-term investment, I would recommend the TI-Nspire, as by the time current freshmen are in college it will be replacing the 84 and 89. The Nspire will probably be available in stores in November 2007. I can help students individually on how to use it. It is allowed on all standardized tests. It also comes with an 84 insert that allows it to be used exactly like an 84 model. But if the student buys the CAS model, then it will not come with that insert, and it is allowed on AP tests but not ACT. The CAS model has the capability of solving many equations directly without any knowledge being required of the students other than how to tell the calculator to do it. The TI-89 calculator is also possible to use, but would require the student to use his/her manual to learn its operation as it differs significantly from the TI-83/84. Thus, students could not directly follow instructions in textbooks or as being modeled in class and is not permissible for use on the ACT. If your student is a technophile it can still be a very good choice. Students who pursue science/engineering degrees may benefit from use of this calculator in college more than from an 84, although either would be useful. If finances make it impossible to get a graphing calculator, talk to the school counselor about options. AP Statistics uses the TI-83 or TI-84 calculator very extensively, especially in second semester. The TI-89 can be used only if a student will self-teach how to properly access and use its statistics capabilities. No other calculators have the necessary capabilities for AP Statistics. The TI-92 is not allowed on any standardized tests and is not recommended. Other brands of graphing calculators such as Sharp or Casio may be able to perform many functions required for mathematics aside from AP courses, but would require the student to use his/her manual to learn its operation as it differs significantly from the TI-83/84. The TI-83 / TI-84 calculators are used extensively in education all over the world with a majority of textbooks incorporating their use into lessons, and would be useful throughout a student's college education as well. What should I do if I am absent? Check the homework page for assignments and contact students in your class for notes and other information. If an assignment was due the day you were absent, be prepared to turn it in on your first day of return. If an assignment was assigned while you were absent, be prepared to turn it in as soon as possible after your return. Schedule help appointments with Ms. Beatty as soon as possible after you return if necessary. What should I do if I don't understand a topic? First of all, don't get discouraged and don't give up. You can do this! Examine what you have been doing for class and see if there is something in your study habits that is contributing to the problem. Do you need to focus in class more? Take better notes? Keep on top of homework? Ask questions? Deal with text anxiety? Take the initiative to get help as soon as possible while it is still a minor problem and hasn't had a chance to become a major one. Students who come in for "small" problems early typically get their problems solved in only a few minutes. Ms. Beatty is very happy to see you before school, after school and during second lunch - please check with her whenever possible to make sure she doesn't have a meeting. When you are doing homework or classwork but it just isn't working out for you, don't erase all your work even if it is wrong. Seeing that work can help your teacher figure out where you are getting confused and it also shows your efforts in working on the problem. Try to figure out as specifically as possible what is giving you problems and write that down and then make an appointment with your teacher to talk about it. You are also encouraged to talk to classmates, students in other sections of the same class, friends, parents, counselors, or teachers who know the course material for help. Use whatever resources are available to you. As a parent, how can I help my student in math? If you understand the course content, feel free to check student work and tutor your child if needed. Even if you do not understand the course content, you can help your student in the following ways: 1. Review class notes with your student. If a student's notes are not usable for study, help the student write more effective notes and guide the student in how to use notes for study. 2. Make sure your student is completing assignments in a timely manner and is explaining his/her work and thinking. 3. If a student doesn't know how to do a problem, ask him/her to tell you what the problem or assignment is asking the student to do, or help a student clarify what it is asking. 4. Have the student call a classmate to ask them about the work. 5. Have the student e-mail the teacher with a question. 6. Have the student schedule a help appointment with Ms. Beatty. 7. Make sure the student is attending class on time daily and is using class time effectively. 8. Make sure the student is bringing textbook and materials to class every day. 9. Make sure your child attempts all problems and writes something down for his/her effort. If a student cannot solve a problem, he or she should still show what was tried rather than erasing it. The student should also try to write down as specifically as possible what is preventing reaching a solution - that could be a particular step he or she does not understand, it could be something about the wording of the problem that the child finds confusing, etc. The student should then make an appointment with the teacher to discuss those specific issues. 10. Encourage good time management and organization skills in your child. Habits learned now are learned much easier than when the student gets to college. Make sure your child is not over-extended or over-scheduled, and make sure your child has an adequate environment for study. If I'm not doing well in math, should I get a tutor? Making appointments early and often with Ms. Beatty or forming a peer study/homework group is often much more effective than hiring a tutor, and also free. Study/homework groups can be a lot of fun! What math courses should I take? You should take the most rigorous math courses you can during high school to best prepare for college. Research shows that students who earn a lower grade in a college preparatory course perform better in college than those who earn higher grades in easier courses. It can be a big mistake for a student to take a lightened course load senior year. At the minimum every student should complete Algeo 1,2; Algeo 3,4 and Algeo 5,6 if possible, regardless of future career plans. Classes of 2011 and later are also required to take at least one more year of upper level math for college admission. Ideally, all students would take at least one additional mathematics course beyond Algeo 5,6 such as Functions, Statistics and Trigonometry (FST), Math Analysis/Trig (PreCalculus), AP Statistics, and/or AP Calculus. Other acceptable alternatives are Mathematical Modeling and Problem Solving. Why is it necessary to have a graphing calculator? A graphing calculator is a tool that enables students to get beyond mere mechanics to be able to explore mathematical concepts in depth in an efficient manner. A large number of course activities and assignments use TI-83 / TI-84 calculators and some cannot be easily completed without them. Particularly in AP Statistics, there are some processes that simply cannot be done by hand. The calculator is a computer and in the modern world a great deal of mathematics is computer-based. Students who do not learn the use of technology for mathematical applications are at a disadvantage in college and in the work force. The TI-83 / TI-84 calculators are used extensively in education all over the world with textbooks incorporating their use into lessons, and would be useful throughout a student's college education as well. What tutoring help is available? See the Teacher's Schedule link for times, or ask Ms. Beatty or try to drop by. Also talk to your counselor about tutoring options aside from those provided by your teacher. You can also get help from any other teacher in the math department and probably several in the science department as well. Don't be afraid or lazy about getting help.
