About The Teacher
August 17, 2009 This is my ninth year at PRA and my ninth year of teaching. I spent 25 years raising our six children after getting my education. I am married to a wonderful husband who is an attorney. We have five living children and all of them are married. My two daughters and two of my three sons and their families now live close by and four of my eleven grandchildren attend PRA. One of our sons lives out in Utah. I love being a teacher. I love to be with my family and to read. I love crafts and sewing but do not get much time for that. I do NOT drink coffee or tea. I prefer emails to phone calls. 8-09 All of our family was together this month for a long weekend at a house in Winter Park. That was 13 adults (including my mother-in-law) and 11 children- five of them were two year olds. It was crazy but so fun to be together and to visit and enjoy the children. It rained but we still managed to try out the alpine slide--each adult taking a child except the oldest four grandchildren got to try it alone. We also roasted marshmallows and made s'mores, played games and prepared food. Families are wonderful! Last Year's Entries: 1-15-08 I love to read. As an elementary student I always had a book in my hand and my favorite time of day at school was when we got to silent read our own book and the other was when my teachers read aloud to the class. Some of those books are still my favorite books and I read them to my students. I enjoyed the Nancy Drew series, Sue Barton, RN, books about horses and biographies. One of my favorite days is the day I get a new book and get to spend the day reading it. When I got the seventh Harry Potter book I read it from seven in the morning until I finished the book. I get so excited when one of my students moves from reading to LOVING to read. This is the key to a lifelong love of reading and learning. More than you wanted to know: 2-6-08 My husband had a job before I started teaching that allowed him to travel the world and several times a year I got to travel with him. I never thought that I would see the world, but I have visited Australia, New Zealand, Japan, England, France, Switzerland, Italy (just a corner), the Netherlands, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Being one fourth Irish, I loved seeing Ireland, eating Irish stew in an Irish pub and kissing the Blarney Stone. I feel very fortunate to have visited these countries, but no matter how wonderful they were, I was always grateful to set foot on American soil again. I love America and love teaching my students about how great it is. 4-24-08 My grandchildren light up my life! Our triplets are crawling all over and got their first hair cuts. Each year after school is out, I have a End of School campout with my grandchildren. We sleep in the tent in the backyard, roast marshmellows, tell stories and play games. I am looking forward to our campout this year. I don't think the triplets will attend, but I will have seven of my grandchildren here. I love my family and one of the highlights of my summer is my family's Murphy Family Reunion each July. This is a reunion of my mom, me and my three brothers and my sister and all of our children and grandchildren that can attend. We number way over 100 and at least 80 attend each year. My sister (who is a middle school special reading teacher) and I always plan it and have a great time playing with all the kids. One of our favorite activities is the gigantic water fight and a Bingo game for white elephant prizes that always ends in a bean fight with the dry beans we use as markers. 9-24-08 My favorite teacher was Mrs. Eade, my third grade teacher. What I remember most about her was that she had fun activities for her students like collecting bubble gum wrappers to order art prints of the masters for our classroom, made us things from the extra fabric of the clothes she had made for herself, and made us all feel that we were her favorite. In fourth grade I won first prize in a poetry contest at school for my poem on George Washington. In elementary school, I loved to play jacks, spin around a bar, play four square, kickball and I played first base on a softball team. Having four brothers, I was what was called a tomboy. I loved sports but there was little opportunity for girls to play sports in high school way back when so I concentrated on my studies. 2-20-09 Over the Presidents' Day weekend, our whole family was in town for our granddaughter, Mallory's baptism. All of our children and grandchildren were here and we took this chance to have a family portrait taken. Our oldest child is Meagan, married to Mark. Three of their four children attend PRA and Marshall will start in kindergarten next year. Our next child is Sean, married to Shelley. They are the parents of triplets, two boys and a girl who will be two in July. They live in Utah where Sean is an immigration attorney. Our son Matthew, is married to Leslie. They have two boys and live in Utah where Matthew is a dentist. Our son Jeffrey, is married to Jen. They have a son who is 5 months old. Jeffrey is in his second year of law school in San Diego. Last, our daughter Katie, married to Hunter, lives close by with their daughter Keelia, age 1. Hunter is in school studying to be an engineer. We had a wonderful weekend together eating and playing and catching up.
