Message from the Principal

It is difficult to believe that we are mailing our last newsletter for the 2007-08 school year. The 8th grade students are looking like young adults and the 6th grade students act like they are “experts” at middle school. This is also the time of year when we have more events scheduled than we have days in the week. Here is a condensed version of just a few: *Over a hundred of our students are in full swing rehearsing for the “Wizard of Oz.” This school wide production will be performed May 15-17 at the high school auditorium. I would recommend purchasing tickets early because past experience has shown that the shows will be sold out. *Our annual tree sale that supports our program Everything Outdoors Steamboat will be taking place May 9. Please get those orders in quickly because there is very limited additional inventory on hand the day of delivery. *We will be hosting our SSMS track meet on Saturday, May 3 at the high school track. This is a great volunteer opportunity. Please contact the office if interested. *Forty students will be traveling to Colorado State University April 30-May 1 to work with a number of science and veterinary professors. *Our band students have been performing at a very high level. They received high marks at a recent competition in Craig, Colorado. They will be performing at Elitch Gardens on May 10 and finish the year with performances on May 20 and May 22. *Our incoming 5th grade students and parents will be participating in several transition activities. We are excited to have them become part of our school community. Our 8th grade students will be taking part in high school transition events. *Twenty two students will be traveling to the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center the last week of May. They will be working on archaeological digs. This is an amazing experience that is offered to all students. *Eight students are spending three weeks in Sweden taking part in a student exchange program. They will be teaching lessons at a Swedish school. *8th grade students are busy planning their portfolio presentations that are scheduled for the first week of June. Graduation is scheduled for June 4 at 7:00 p.m. *The last day of school for our 6th and 7th students is June 6, 2008. I want to share with you that our students did an amazing job completing their CSAP assessments. Their work ethic was outstanding and I very much appreciate the support of the many parent volunteers that gave of their time during the testing sessions. It is always a relief to get those assessments completed and shipped back to the Colorado Department of Education. Within the next couple of weeks, you should be receiving a survey in the mail. It is called the Harris Interactive Survey for Schools. We work extremely hard to make this a great school. Part of our success is based upon the tremendous support we receive from the community. Please take the time to complete the parent survey. While we are very proud of our successes, we are constantly striving to improve. It is important that we hear your thoughts on the strengths and weaknesses of our programs. Please call me if you have any questions or concerns. Tim Bishop

LATEST NEWS
Congratulations-Showcase Award
Twelve Steamboat Springs Middle School 7th grade students took top honors at the Middle School World Health Affairs Challenge held at Denver University on April 12th. Over 35 middle schools from around the state participated in the World Health Affairs Challenge. Students researched and prepared presentations related to world health issues. The SSMS students focused on obesity and related health risks. Sharing a skit they wrote focusing on the background issues related to obesity, health risks, global statistics, and possible solutions to this massive problem earned the team one of two Showcase Awards given at this event. Judges chose two teams to present their skits for all schools that they felt presented a vital message for youth in the world. In addition, the SSMS team placed second in the “Types of Diseases” category of the competition. Congratulations to Halle Bramer, Samantha Cline, Codi Coghlan, Dane Dixson, Nikki Fry, Erika Kipfer, Alyssa McMahon, Kali Morris, Garrison Osteen, McKenzie Repollo, Emily Speiss and Peyton Trask.
