| The Eighth Grade Portfolio is a requirement for graduation from Steamboat
Springs Middle School. Each student will build a portfolio which represents
themselves as students and citizens. The portfolio itself will consist of
artifacts (3) from each core class (English, science, history, math), one
artifact from P.E. or an Encore class, and an artifact from outside of the
school. Each artifact will be explained in an essay which describes the
artifacts in such a way that allows the student to reflect on themselves in
different ways. The "Productive Citizen Categories" will be used to help
our students really reflect upon their strengths and weaknesses. The
presentation is attended by invited adult guests (and older siblings!) and
lasts 10-15 for each student.
This is a time for your eighth grader to show what kind of person they are
at this time in their lives. It is meant to be a true reflection by the
student. Adult mentors are assigned to each student. Time is given during
Focus time each week of April and May to allow students to work on the
requirements. This is also a time that they may work on their
presentations. Students are encouraged to use multi-media and
creativity in their personal presentations. Portfolio presentations will be
scheduled individually the first week of June by each student's mentor.
Letters that describe the dates and times that are available will be given
to portfolio classes in April.
More specific information about the Eighth Grade portfolio will be given at
a parent meeting in March. Letters and handouts will be arriving by mail
and will be given to your students as well.
