Help Students Avoid Exaggeration
(from the MASTER Teacher)
"Some students have a tendency to exaggerate. When they do, question them
about specifics first."
Sound familiar? Do you hear the words, "a lot of", "everyone" or "no one" in
conversation with your child? I hear them often enough to know that students
tend to exaggerate.
How can you blame them when we as adults try out these phrases ourselves?
We believe we gain credibility when more are on our side. And we believe that
we have a better chance of having someone listen to us if "others" feel the
same way.
A simple thought. Next time we hear, or use, all or nothing words/phrases,
remember to question the talker, or ourself, about the general comments we
hear/make and try to break them down into something more specific.
