Fortunately, there is all kinds of good news to share; the question is: Is anyone really interested in the good news? Or do we prefer gray days Loudon Wainwright mocks the pessimist with? 97 students tried out for acting parts in the spring musical, “Wizard of Oz” and everyone one of them will have the opportunity to perform on stage. Oh by the way, this is not “just a middle school play.” If you have never seen one of the Keating/Churchill productions then you are in for a treat. The fact that we have our very own Rusty DeLucia as the director is one more gigantic feather in our cap. For those who are still a little stage shy, we have numerous positions to fill from set construction and design to photography and costumes. It is my sincere desire that every student that wants to participate in the show will let us know. Show dates are May 15, 16, and 17th. The Steamboat Springs Middle School Principal’s Information Committee (PIC) has contributed to a number of teacher/staff requests. I do not have the opportunity to take part in the meetings that often since I spend the meeting time helping monitor the lunch room. Whenever I am fortunate enough to be there, I am overwhelmed by the genuine commitment this group has in welfare of the middle school. Their generosity is greatly appreciated and the positive way the committee does business is incredible refreshing. Thank you to all who join our PIC meetings and particularly to our chairpersons, Julie Ernst and Brad Piske! The middle school schedule is almost complete. Although all teacher assignments have not been determined, times for encore and core classes are close to completion. A “new” element added to the schedule next year will be an intervention time for 6th, 7th and 8th grades. The quotation marks bracketing “new” refers to the fact that the intervention time was initiated by the 6th grade team this year. The feedback from the 6th grade and Spanish teachers was so positive about this opportunity to work with their students in a smaller classroom setting that the entire building chose to offer the same experience for their students. In all my years in education, I have never felt this strong about the work we will be able to do with our students after implementing this intervention model. Kudos go to the 6th grade team for coming up with the plan. CSAPs. When I first started at the middle school we divided up all of our students and had them take the CSAP tests in small group environments. We felt the smaller the group, the better our students were able to focus. Although our idea was sound, we knew there had to be something better. Eventually we discovered that our students tended to perform best when they tested in their regular classrooms with their regular teachers. We even tried to figure out a way that math CSAPs could be taken in their math classrooms and reading/writing CSAPs could be taken in their Language Arts classrooms. Considering the requirements set forth by the state, this was not an easy task but it was one that 7th grade was able to incorporate. This week, the vast majority of students will be taking the CSAP with their regular core teachers with very few exceptions. This is a tribute to our entire staff. I know that there seems to be a great deal of uncertainty in Steamboat Springs about the state of the school district. In part, some of the anxiety is justified. Having not had a superintendent at the beginning of the school year allowed for certain things to fall between the cracks. It was difficult not having a leader to make decisions important to our and other schools in the district. As far as what happens at the high school, 8th grade parents are and should be concerned. What everyone needs to know is that this district is on sound footing and at the utmost, the needs of your child(ren) will always be the focus of the classroom teacher. This is an amazing community in which to raise your/my/our children in and I feel very fortunate. I don’t know about you but considering the number of gray days we had this winter, I am ready for some blue skies.
