Units of study: Cross-Country Skiing, Jump Roping, Basketball
Physical Education students have participated in a variety of physical
activities during the third quarter of the school year. Our Cross-Country
ski unit included an introductory into this fun outdoor recreational activity.
Students learned about the equipment and its fit and function and also
participated in both flat track touring as well as uphill and downhill
techniques. While touring, students found out what a great form of
exercise Cross-country skiing can be to develop our heart and lung
endurance and overall fitness.

Most recently, we have been learning new skills in the activities of jump
roping and basketball. Students have been practicing their short jump
rope and long jump roping skills. Along with learning tricks such as the
single jump, the bell, the side swing, the front cross, the can can, the
double under, and the mad dog, student were also challenged to test
their jump roping endurance and their jump roping speed in one
minute. Numerous 3rd, 4th and 5th graders achieved to reach the
Endurance Club of over 1 minute and the Speed Club of over 100 jumps
in one minute. The culminating event of the jump rope unit was our
Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser which was a service project benefiting
the American Heart Association.

In basketball we have been developing our hand-eye coordination by
practicing dribbling the basketball with either hand. During our dribbling
drills we also emphasize having balance by using the loco-motor skill of
the two foot jump stop and the basketball pivot. Another loco-motor skill
that we practiced included changing directions quickly with sharp cuts.
This skill is valuable in a variety of different sports and recreational
activities. Together with ball handling and fundamental movements,
students have also been learning and practicing basketball shooting
and passing fundamentals. Intermediate students are also taught a
variety of basketball shooting games, and the basic rules of basketball.
