Welcome to Soda Creek Elementary School

Soda Creek Elementary School is located in the heart of Steamboat Springs. We are surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains. We are a kindergarten through fifth grade school and we have approximately 440 students. The picture is an artist's rendering of our new building. Our first day in the new building was October 6, 2008.

Our Soda Creek 2010 Winter Olympic Ceremonies will take place on Friday, February 12th from about 9:00-10:00 at Howelsen Hill!

Message from the Principal

Welcome to Soda Creek Elementary School! We feel very lucky to have such wonderful children and supportive parents at our school. Our mission is to meet the needs of all of our students with individual attention and we work in teams to accomplish this each day. We need for our parents to actively team with us toward this goal and we encourage you to contact us with any information, questions, concerns or ideas. Thanks, in advance, for your support!

Here are a few bits of information that I hope will help you feel informed at our school:

*Our office is open Monday - Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. You can always call earlier or later and leave a message for us. The office phone number is 879-0652.

*Please call the office if your child will not be attending school that day. If we don't hear from you, the school nurse will be calling you to confirm that your child is absent. This call is to make sure all students are safely accounted for either at home or at school.

*Our "loop" at the front of the school is a safe way for you to drop-off or pick-up your child each day. If you prefer to park and walk in, please do not park on private property or block driveways. The parking area for the apartment building on Pahwintah Street is private property and is not an appropriate place for parents to park. We work hard to be good neighbors in this tight downtown space and I appreciate you helping us retain that relationship with our neighbors!

*Please do not use your cell phone in the loop. We have had numerous close calls with parents talking on cell phones and either not having complete control of their steering wheel or not paying close enough attention to our safety supervisors. PLEASE PUT YOUR CELL PHONE DOWN UNTIL YOU LEAVE THE LOOP FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR CHILDREN. Thank you.

*You are encouraged to become a member of our PIC (Parent-Principal Information Committee) and/or our SAC (School Accountability Committee). Both committees meet once a month during the day and their meetings are held in our school conference room in the office area.

We strive to communciate well via this webpage and notices sent home, however, if you are needing information at any time, please call our office at 879-0652. We are here to support you and our students so please let us know what you need. Thank you, in advance, for supporting our staff and students as we all work together this year!

I appreciate you linking to our webpage for information on Soda Creek Elementary School. If there are other things that you would like for us to provide via this website, please submit your ideas by clicking on the "contact us" link and visit our "submit comments" section.

Safety Check-Points for Parents
*Tell your child that you will love him or her unconditionally, no matter what happens. You may not like his or her actions or words, but you still love the child.

*Teach your child safety tips in small, repeated, positive doses. Avoid using the word stranger! Children think they know people more than they actually do, and the term stranger is ineffective. Most children are molested, abused, abducted, or exploited by someone they know. Remind your child always to CHECK FIRST before going anywhere with anyone!

*Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle! It can take as little as three seconds for someone to steal the car; the inside temperature may be harmful; the child may release the brake. You are also subject to a fine!

*Give your young child the names of two Safety Persons who can always be trusted for rides, help, etc. Use a code word with children older than third grade.

*Monitor what your child is doing on the computer! Instruct him or her not to give out personal information on the Internet or to make arrangements to meet in person someone he or she met online. Make sure your child knows how to be '"cyber-safe."

*Remind your child that he or she is in charge of his or her body, and no one has the right to touch or talk about this body in a way that is inappropriate or makes the child feel uncomfortable.

*ASK if there are guns in the house where your child is going to play. Discuss gun safety with your child.

*Update photos four times a year for preschoolers and once a year after that. Keep a Child Profile booklet and Personal ID Kit or Amber Stick up-to-date with important data about your child.

*Have your child wear items with his or her name on them only inside the house. Children are more likely to trust someone who calls them by name. Know what your child is wearing each day in case you need to describe him or her.

*Teach your child to be kind and tolerant of others. Children need to understand and accept others who are different from them. Model this behavior yourself.

*Be alert to situations around you involving other children. Pay attention to people and details.

"Watch my child, and I'll watch yours." Every Child is a Blessing!
