In the morning, students may not arrive before 8:00 a.m. as we have no supervision until then. After 8:00, all students proceed to the play area at the back of the school. School personnel will direct students who are dropped off in the loop at the front of the school to go to the play area where we have supervision. Parents are asked to not enter the play area unless necessary as the supervisors need to be able to safely monitor students' needs.
When it is too cold or wet for students to be outside, students will be escorted into the commons area where they will wait at the tables until 8:15 a.m.
At 8:15 a.m., teachers meet students on the playground or in the commons (as appropriate) where they line up and begin their school day. This time is an important part of helping students start their day with the attention of their teacher and to enter the building ready to have a great day together. We ask that parents not use this time to visit with their child's teacher so that each child can get the attention he/she needs to start the day positively.
Late arrivals: Students who arrive after 8:20 a.m. must check in at the office to be registered as present in our computer system. If a student needs assistance getting to his/her class, one of our office staff will gladly assist. We ask that parents do not escort late students to the class because grounding morning activities would be interrupted.
Parents: Parents who need to drop off something for a child, talk with a teacher or who have any other needs should come to the school office. We are here to assist you and we will take needed items to the classroom for you, help you leave a voicemail for a teacher who will call you at his/her earliest convenience when he/she is not teaching,or will find answers to any questions or needs you have. If parents wish to have lunch with their child, they must check in at the office and receive a visitor's lanyard before proceeding to the lunchroom. All volunteers also register at the office and receive a visitor's lanyard. The only doors that remain unlocked during the school day are the front doors of the school for security reasons, so please always come directly to the front office when visiting.
Recesses: Please be sure that your child is dressed appropriately for Steamboat weather as we strive to have children play outside every day. Layering is suggested so that children are comfortable in warm and cooler areas of the school as well. All students are required to wear snowpants, coats, hats and gloves to play in the snow so that they remain dry and comfortable for the entire school day. If a child is not dressed appropriately, he/she will be restricted to drier areas of the playground during recesses. If the temperature is under 10 degrees, indoor recesses will be held and children will be supervised in their classroom areas. If you need snowclothes for your child, please contact the school for assistance.
Dismissal: At 3:05 each day, teachers will escort all students out of the building and help them proceed to the bus, meet parents who walk or bike in or wait for pick-up in the loop by the supervisors who are in orange vests.
After School Lock Time: The front doors of the school are locked each day at 4:00 p.m. when the office closes.
Evening Program Entrance: To enter the school for all after-hour programs (music performances, etc.), please come to the "After Hours Entrance" which is located near the entrance of the loop at the front of the school (the door closest to the music room). A sign designating this entrance will be completed soon! This is also the pick-up area for the City After School Action Program which is housed at Soda Creek Elementary School each day from right after school until 5:45 p.m.
We are asking for everyone's help toward making our campus safe and fun. For our security plans to work, we need everyone's support. We are working hard to balance security issues with continuing to make Soda Creek a very welcoming and friendly place for visitors. It is very important for us to continue to team and support every student's needs and we look forward to those opportunities.
